I’d like some ideas on how you made your companion way cover slide easier. I have a 1984 Catalina 30 which I have been improving for two years. My last project is the companion way. The hatch cover is a real back breaker and very difficult for the Admiral to move. How have you made life easier and fixed this type of problem. How can I make it slide better? Thanks as always for all of the great fixes on get from this group.

My hatch slides on fiberglass rails. Periodically I spray the rails with a Teflon lubricant. Works great.

Rag,

Had the same problems forever. Fiberglas flange on the hatch cover sliding on fiberglas cabin top.

A real FUBAR in design given the weight of the hatch.

I found a metal shop & made two 1 1/2" wide polished strips of stainless steel. I epoxy-ed them in and it slides easier. The downside is that I have to clean them every couple of months, but it no longer wears on the fiberglas (this is the original way fiberglas it was spelled).

Do you see the gel coat wearing on your cabin top? This was why I went to the strips.

I believe McMaster has some teflon strips that you could glue/fasten to the slide area. I did this on another boat and it worked great

Rag,

Our boats are a similar vintage and just down the road from each other, so I think our conditions are the same.

I think with all the gunk in the air in our part of town just keeping that groove that the sea hood runs in clean is a big help. I use a cloth on a stick to scrub it out every now and again and it makes a big difference. Use lots of running water as well, you'll be suprised what comes out of there!

Also, I used to use a paste wax in the groove, but I now use McLube Sailkote in the (clean) groove and I think it works better.

Ron has a good point about the wear as well, it's just not a great design. Actually, it probably was such a great design that no one at the factory thought we'd be talking about how to keep it working well almost three decades later! :)

I've heard of numerous owners using the McMaster/Carr teflon strips as well, and I also remember something called Japanese Glide Tape that some owners swear by. For now I just clean, but I'll probably get to one of those solutions if the boat lasts yet another decade!

We have used the Japanese Glide tape (Google it) for years. You still have to clean the gunk out with a hose, but it's a great improvement.

We have a Pearson, but the design is probably similar. For a few years, we used McLube Sailkote, but that was only a temporary fix and still didn't address the wear on the glass against glass surface. Start of this season, I removed the hatch and put some Japanese Glide Tape on the cabintop where the hatch slides. WHAT A DIFFERENCE! I highly recommend it. Not sure if SBO carries it, but if they don't, you can get it online from Annapolis Performance Sailing.
