I was thinking of removing companion way slide board and installing doors. Has anyone ever done this on this model and is it beneficial.Any info would be appreciated.

I'm considering doors also

You will want to leave the slats in place and fit the doors to run on the outside of the slats. That way in a big blow for safety reasons you can still put the slats in. If the boat was even rolled the doors will surely seporate and allow water in the cabin thus jepordizing the boat. Dick Dixon has some great examples in the forums. He may be of some help. About those companionway doors.

Many years ago I made a winter companionway hatch board. It was just a single piece of 3/4" plywood stained and varnished. I made it because it seemed more secure for the long winter layup. And it allowed me to take the original boards home for some varnish. The next season I left it on the boat. Then I began using it when I realized how much easier it was to go in and out without the hassle of the three boards. Just lift it out and sit it against the bulkhead or put it below. We keep it in most of the summer because of the air-conditioning. The point being that it is so simple and much easier and cheaper than doors.

Doors are the way to go

Doors are a blessing. I have two swinging doors with glass inserts on my 86 H31 and they are a breeze to work with. You will probably have to have them custom made of teak and fitted into the exsiting slats with external hinges and a locking hasp linked to the sliding hatch cover. Makes getting in and out of the boat a snap and you can install curtains on the inside of the doors, if glass panels are inserted. Hooks at the bottom of each door that can be dropped into eyes screwed into the bulkhead to hold the doors open during sailing.

I built a teak frame w/lexan window insert that slides into the hatch board grooves. Sweet to use, easy to store in the v-berth.
