Hello folks,
:confused:I have finally fabricated a set of vertical swinging doors to replace the annoying slat boards on our 2002 Hunter 356. I used 3/4 Starboard material. The doors will have lexan clear window slide-in inserts as well as slide-in screen inserts. In all I have about 4 hours in fabrication.
Here is where I could use some help; The doors will swing inward. I plan to use "slip" hinges on the inside to assist opening [able to life upward 1/2" to clear the bottom track]. I have searched the world over for "slip" hinges and all I find are "lift off" hinges. Of course that would work but I did not want the door comming off in my hands everytime I lifted it up to open. I was thinking that "slip" hinge meant you could lift the the door up to open and it would not come right off the hinge pin. Does anyone have any info on this?

Please check out the attached photo of my creation in process [unsanded phase].
thanks...

It is probably too late but I purchased doors from Zarcor that look like what you have built. They open outward and use the lift off hinges.
Maybe you'd should if it is too late consider having them outward.
This would provide a stronger door hence greater security

door security

Having the door open outward does not necessarily make a stronger door, and in this case probably would not. Doors open toward their hinges, and an exposed hinge would be a vulnerability, hence less secure.

Regardless of which way they open, you will love them
So much easier to get in and out without fighting with hatch boards.

Look awesome, I would like some for my 31 hunter. Would you consider fabricating? Let me know. Thanks Art

Thanks to all who responded. Regarding the opening direction [inward or outward]; I chose the inward motion because 1. the hinges were not exposed and mostly so that I didn't have any cockpit obstruction. And, we do not plan to lift them completely off the slip hinges. So no more storing the door panels!! When opening you simply raise them 1/2" to clear the bottom track and then they remain folded inward against the companionway sidewalls. Of course I will relocate the safety grab handles to permit the doors to fold completly against the companionway entrance walls. And regarding making a set for any of you....that's probably not a problem. However, in 9 days we are departing for 3-4 months of sailing on the great lakes [SV is already on the hard in Boyne City, MI]. Upon our return we can discuss the doors again.
thanks.

Jim, did you ever find the slip hinges? If not, have you tried a hardware store or Home Despot?

I remember using them about 45 years ago in Europe. There are 2 barrels under an 45 degree angle instead of the 90 degree angle for a normal hinge.
Open the door and the leaf on the door lifts up gradually, following the lift of the 45 degree angle.( left and right hinges req.)
This is a gradual lift for maybe 3/8" over the swing of the door and would not clear the 1/2" required as soon as you open the door.:D
Also some clearance is needed at the top of the doors to accommodate the rise of the door.
Might not help, but brings back memories!
