companion doors

I have seen under the store heading about the companion way doors made of teak. I have a 98 Macgregor 26X. Has anyone out there replaced their fiberglass hatch with one of these doors. I was wanting to build my own and was just wondering how well it worked.

Did you look at the price of those things! I purchased the wood to make my teak hatchboards (Pearson 303) for about 100 bucks. As long as you have the right tools... and your time is worth nothing... I would make your own. If money is no object... what's another $1,000. Good Luck.

measure carefully. I found the opening in our San Juan 28 is not symmetrical after I built the doors. The pic shows how they came out. For windows I used Lexan plastic with some cheap stick on stuff to create "privacy glass." They work great for us. They lift off when we want to remove them for sailing. The hinge boats are through bolted with nylon lock nuts for security so they can't just be unscrewed with a screwdriver.

Still looks pretty good, Ken. That's a nice upgrade - I never liked taking hatch boards out, and stowing them every time I enter the boat.
We assume our boats are symmetrical and we're not even symmetrical .....
