I have a 1991 Catalina 30. Has anyone out there had or have a problem with water leaking in throught the top forward section of the compaionway hatch? During out recent rains, the interior of my boat has been soaked. I went down when it was raining and the water was pouring in at the inside corners of the companionway hatch. Help. How do I seal it. The hatch has to slide back. Thanks for any comments or suggestions. Lisa

Companionway Hatch Cover

Had the same problem. It didn't appear that there was a way to keep the rain out. We made a hatch cover from sunbrella and it works perfectly. Looks good, keeps the sun out also, and was very simple to make. $20.00 Sean

Compaionway cover

Hi Sean, Thanks for the reply. Does the material cover the hatch only? How do you attach it? Lisa

Weep holes

I believe your problem is clogged weep holes. On the forward edge of the exterior cover(on top of the cabin) there should be weep holes for the hatch track. It's what your sliding hatch rides in...These tend to fill up with dirt over the years and need to be cleaned out. Depending on how bad it is or what is actually clogging the holes you may be able to to wash it out with a hose and water. This is a good thing to do from time to time because the dirt tends to wear out the sliding surface on the hatch. If you can't get it unplugged that way then the only resort is to remove the teak trim on both sides of the sliding hatch. You'll have to remove the wood bungs to get at the screws holding down the teak and then unscrew the fiberglass cover. When this is done you should be able get the sliding hatch completely out. Then wash out the grooves as best you can. (I did this last winter) I couldn't get the cover off without removing the traveler. Which is fine, if you had to go this far, support the cover with a block or 2 of wood so you can clean it out easier. After it clean, reassemble and don't forget the bedding compound on the teak. There is no way of preventing the dirt from getting in there. A dodger or or a hatch cover like Sean described that snaps down to the teak or fiberglass will slow the dirt invasion along with regular flushing from a hose. Hope this helps.

Hatch cover

The cover has five snaps that attach to the top of the Hatch and two snaps per side that attach to the fiberglass outside the teak. That totally covers the teak around the hatch. No water in the boat and a lot less teak maintenance. Sean

Leaks at Bottom

I have an 84 Cat 30, and my problem is that water drips down the channles that hold the companionway slats, and then drains INTO the cabin rather than flowing out into the cockpit. I get 1-2 cups on water dripping into the aft quarterberth, and across the galley counter into the icebox and stove area. tried weatherstripping and drilling two small weepholes outward from the bottom of the channels, but this did not solve the problem. Has anyone found a solution to this?

Fix for Hatch Leaks

Rick, This has been covered in Tech Talks. On the 83 and later boats they left off the the raised sill where the bottom of hatch boards sit. I installed a piece of teak 1" wide and 1/4" high. Make sure that it butts up against the bottom hatch board. Works like a charm!. Best, Denny Fegan Galaveston TX sdennisf@aol.com
