I've removed the companionway wood steps from my 1996 mkII catalina and sanded them. they are now ready to be varnished. I was thinking of putting on the "ultimate sole" but that is a high gloss finish which I think would clash with the rest of the interior. I was thinking it should be a more satin finish to match the rest of the interior.any suggestions?

Non-skid

John, if you want to match the original Catalina finish, see the posting at the Catalina 320 website. One thing I've thought about doing is adding a topcoat with non-skid particles. Sometimes my steps get slippery when wet.

I've had high gloss oil based poly-u on my

steps for 2 years & it has held up fairly well. I worried about traction & was going to add some non-skid strips but traction did not seem to be a problem. Needs touch-up now but we had 35 inches of rain last year & I don't have a dodger so they were soaked many times.

Ultimate Sole is supposed to be Non Skid

I haven't used it, but some previous e-mails have indicated that it is pretty non-skid on the cabin soles, so it should be OK for the companionway ladder. Steve Alchemist C-320 #909

Ultimate Sole...

...is non skid and is high gloss. I put it on my steps last spring, still looks great and is not slippery. If you have questions try www.ultimatesole.com or 508-651-3638 (tech spt).
