Am currently using a short shaft motor on my compac16. The problem is that in the down position of the motor bracket, it is not possible to drop the motor handle down as it is lower than the boat transom. Pretty hard to steer my motor with the handle up. Also my Johnson motor has no way of locking the shaft in one position so I can steer with the tiller. I am thinking of using a long shaft and keeping the bracket always in up position. Anyone used a long shaft on the compac16? I have a small 3 1/2 hp Nisson which does lock but no gearing on it so that's a problem too.

Entertain a 20 inch shaft 5 hp say from Nissan which is the same engine as the Tohatsu and Mercury all built by Tohatsu. Before you buy anything, have the new motor on a motor stand and measure first to see if that would work. It did when I was a dealer but again measure first for your benefit.

Hey Crazy! I think you are right....I'll get rid of that short shaft and bring the boat to the dealer and actually put it in place. Maybe I can get a few bucks on a trade in.
