This is embarrassing , 25 yrs. ago when we first got our little Westsail it needed a bunch of stuff done . I hired what I thought was a competent shop , turned out not so much . I got sold some things that I didn't really need or they never worked right . Over the yrs. I have gotten rid of some things in the engine room , some of it 70's vintage . I decided to up grade my battery charger to "Maine's" Sterling Pro Charger 40 amp , the installation I'm going to hire out to a ABYC electrician . OK the embarrassing part , 25 yrs. ago I vaguely remember the shop telling me I needed the part pictured . The wires coming off it go to my 1- 2 all switch and one wire goes to my amp meter . A friend of mine told me my new charger will replace this part and I should get rid of it . So what is the part ? Do I need it ? Thank you for any reply .

It is a diode isolator... If that ammeter is in your engine gauge panel lose it and the diode isolator. Wire the alt direct to the starter lug or the house bank and use an ACR, such as a Blue Sea 7610SI, to charge both banks. Your Sterling can also use the ACR to charge both banks.

That looks like a diode-based isolator. You won't need it, as far as I can tell.
