1-26-03 I have an oday 23 1973. I need to change the steaming light. I want to put in a steaming(mast)/deck light. It has 3 wires coming from the light. I have a 2 prong plug that goes thru the cabin/deck then to the switch.. How do I hook it up.. Do I have to buy a separate switch to turn the steaming light on, then switch it to steaming/deck light(a three way switch)? Do I need a new 3 prong thru deck fitting. (I can't seem to find one if I do!) Do I have to run new wiring.. Right now I just have two wires coming down the mast. Thank You, clif

Clif, I'm sorry nobody has responded to your question. I am interested in doing the same thing to my 1982 O'day 23 and was looking forward to reading all the great advise usually given on this website. I guess there are no experts on this subject out there. Chris

this is what I'm doing
Chris This is what I plan on doing. buyin 40' of 18/3 sj cord and run it down the inside of the mast. Use a thru deck (weather tight fitting, 4 pole.) One pole would not be used. run it to the panel. One switch for the steaming light and one switch for the fore deck light. I think that should work. clif

Mast/deck lighting
Hi, I have a 1972 O'Day 23 myself and this spring will more likely be doing the same thing on my boat as well. I bought my boat in July and have a strong feeling I'll have to re-wire the entire boat. *ugh* I'm not too confident in the looks of the shaby wiring I'm seeing. How yours will hook up does capture my interest too! I'd be interested to hearing what you come up with. I'm also in the process of developing a website about O'day 23's....with bio and pics of mine as I go thru the rehab process. I'll let you know when it's online. Keep me posted on your findings! Mark.. I would like to hear some of your stories about your boat. Mine started out being a good deal of $ 850.00 . Now everytime I finish a job i start another. This last project of taking out the wall that separates the v-berth and cabin and replacing it. Don't knock the support 2x2(corner piece) out without jacking the cabin roof up. Mine drop about 2" No damage, just a loud noise and a wife that thought we needed to abandion ship. clif I would like to see some pics of your boat.

I have the same thots of doing this to my '77 O-23. An additional item I'm going to add is an anchor lite at the top of the mast - in addition to replacing the steaming light with a dual function unit. The rule is that you can get away with one hot wire, but you will have to have a neutral wire for each lite and a switch for each as well. Look at Don Casey's book on Sailboat Electical and there are detailed explainations and drawings - especially if you are looking at rewiring the whole or significant part of the boat. BTW, I know the '23 does not require an anchor lite at the top of the mast - but I'd rather be a little safer than not. Can't hurt. Also, be patient. It's a little slow out there right now - I'm sure additional responses will be forthcoming from our resident experts.

I've had much interest from other O'Day 23 owners. Even Rudy at D&R emailed me, letting me know he was very supportive of that idea for site just for 23's. I too bought my boat at a good deal! ($1,200.00) and too, am finding it's alot of modification work. Mast/deck light is one of my "to do" things. I'm also going to add several new interior lights. Mark

Some thoughts - I replaced my masthead on my 25' 2 years ago and installed a steaming/deck lite. As with most things its easier to tear down than to build up but that might be me. I positioned the lite approximately 3/4 or better up the mast. I drilled out the mast and ran the wiring up the inside to the hole(amazing how small the hole is when you're coming at it from 20' away). I first tried to fish the wire up but was a disaster. Finally I went to Lowe's and purchases 2 12'lengths of tubing and a coupling to screw them together. I drove this up the mast - tough, because they have styrofoam insulation in my mast - eventually able to pusk the wiring up, locate the hole and hook the wire out the hole. I went thru a 3-way switch and then to housepower - grounding as required. Hope this helps and make sure your guage wire is sufficient as required.

I thought it was two hots and one neutral. How would you turn on one light with outout the other if you had one hot connected to both? clif

Could be done either way.
your switch would be on the neutral (neg) side of things. Could be done either way. I think on my boat the switches are all on the neutral side.
