Combi-Prop Shaft Leak?

Hello All,
Other than water leaking from the freeze plugs (see previous topic), the launch went pretty well. The motor is really hard to turn over. Thank goodness for the handle. I am running a separate starting battery with 650CCA. Also, I noticed what looked like a small amount of oil leaking from the aft end of the combi-unit where the prop shaft exits it. Since I rebuilt the combi last winter, I'm thinking I just didn't put enough grease in it (I recall not wanting to put too much). Any other ideas or suggestions?

Hi Jack

Is it oil or grease coming out teh back? If oil or very thin grease then it may mean teh seal between the combi and output reduction gear has worn. This is a large lip seal that comes as part of teh combi kit.

Jack, did you check the rear seal on the engine? Unless your grease
somehow turned into oil, the rear seal is the likely culprit. Trevor

The oil is coming out of the extreme aft end of the combi unit, where the shaft exits the unit. I replaced the seal last winter. However, it is entirely possible that I did a poor job of replacing.

I'm going to try to grease it up again, first. Will let you know how that goes. I didn't put much grease in after I replaced it for fear of over packing. Also, it was winter here and the grease was not flowing very well.

I did replace the seal this winter. I mentioned to Steve, I may have done a poor job at it? I assume this means pulling the combi apart again in the fall? Hopefully it can wait that long.

Let me know if you think adding grease isn't going to help. Or if you think I need to pull the boat now to change the seal. Better to do things the right way now then have to replace a motor.

Hi JackJust add a bit more grease, keep checking on teh engine oil level, keep clean. I sailed (and engined) like that for three seasons without the engine oil level really being affected! Still need to do your annual oil change etc!

Hi Jack

You are looking at the combi to be about 1/2 to 3/2 packed with grease. If you overfill you will push the lipseal out of place when you operate the lever.

Thanks a bunch. I'll pull it again this winter and shoot you an email to order the seals when it gets a little closer. This is absolutely, without a doubt, the best boat group on the planet! I can't really speak to off-world boat groups.

Jack, sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but If the oil is dark black
and runny and smells like diesel it is probably crankcase oil. I don't
think gear grease turns black and runny over time. Trev

Are you sure? I once put left over chicken in the fridge and I'm sure it turned into a green, fuzzy, four-legged mouse!

You're correct, of course. I'll see if she'll make it through the season and pull her apart again in the winter. Since I installed the solar panels this year, I don't motor for much (I'm a wait for the wind kind of guy). We'll have to see how persistent the leak is.
