combi problem

Hello fellow Vega sailors,

Over this weekend I snagged a docking line on my prop. The
engine was in forward when it snagged and stopped the engine.
I was able to remove the line. It was a cold (water at 49f) but
relatively quick job and the prop does not seem to be damaged.
The engine starts easily and there does not seem to any
excessive vibration nor more than the usual loss from the
stuffing box. Later that same day I left the dock in reverse and
there was no problem. When I shifted to forward the prop would
not feather into that position. So I am able to start in neutral and
reverse. When I engage forward propulsion the propellor
remains in the neutral position no mater how fast the the engine
turns. I was hoping that someone has experience with this
problem and could suggest the best or most likely solution.

My very best to all of you.

Hi Antonio;

because the prop rotates, it means the shaft is engaged and
okay. But I think the sleeve is loose! You may be able to
do this while in the water. Check the sleeve if it moves
back and forward (when you use the shifter); if it doesn't
move, then you need to open the nut at the reversing
mechanism and check the clambing rings that hold the
sleeve in place.
There's a small chance the sleeve is loose at the prop.
Then you have to haul the boat! (and remember: the sleeve
has a left hand thread!)

Once ran aground at St. Augustine inlet in Florida. During the debacle, the
anchor line manageded to wrap the prop producing similar symptoms. I suspect
the outer tube slipped. But!!! before taking anything apart, check the
alignmment marks.
PS a Combi can be removed while the boat is the water. Be sure to have lines
tied to the prop to prevent losing the shaft. I had two seperate lines.
Also be sure to have wooden plugs ready to seal the shaft hole. My wife sealed
the inside then I placed a second from the outside. We stayed on a mooring
several weeks in this fashion while repairs were in process. Looking back on it
from 14 years ago it is amazing we didn't sink right in front of the fort.
