What a fantastic response. Makes me wanna become one of y'all. (Sorta) Everyone would do well to read your profile, too.Although I do not sail on the mighty Columbia River I belong to a web yacht club (no costs) called Cascadia Sailing Association. (www.sailcascadia.org). It's about sailing in the Pacific Northwest (or Southwest if you're Canadian). And we have providences for different areas. The group called M.I.S.T.Y (more inland and south than you) sorta run the Columbia River group....as apposed to my group, N.O.R.T.H. (no one really travels here). Then there are the L.O.O.N.I.E. group--the Canadians.... And so forth. You can contact the M.I.S.T.Y group through Ralph, the leader of the group, who has been sailing on the Columbia for over fifty years in his present Catalina 27 and knows the river current by heart. You can contact Ralph at rahsein@comcast.net and ask him for advice and who to contact as to moorages, yacht clubs, and such. He also knows about Hunters as I asked him to look at one for me one time a few years back. Some of the M.I.S.T.Y. group have their boats in Olympia--which might be another option for you. Welcome Home. We missed you.
I sail out of portland. The river is a fine place to sail. Going out to satori is also fun.We are considering a move back to WA (our home) and Vancouver is high on the list. Any Hunter owners out there who sail the Columbia who can share their likes/dislikes of river sailing?
I agree with Kermit here.... I have never heard of the association before this. sounds like some interesting people and a different concept to a sailing association...Although I do not sail on the mighty Columbia River I belong to a web yacht club (no costs) called Cascadia Sailing Association. Les, thanks for some great info! Agreed! The only dislike with river sailing are the days with light wind, where the current takes you downstream while you're trying to go up - but hey, it's the journey not the destination!
We will look in to HSAO when we get there. From what I saw on their website I think we'll like it!There's a great group of Hunter owners across the river from Vancouver called Hunter Sailing Association of Oregon. They have all kinds of organized sailing adventures up and down the river throughout the season. Try http://www.huntersailingoforegon.org/
There is also a Hunter dealer on Hayden Island off the first Oregon I-5 exit called Passion Yachts. Excellent people who know the river and support HSAO.
Funny how my ipad corrects Astoria to satori.I sail out of portland. The river is a fine place to sail. Going out to satori is also fun.
Yes, please be sure to look up HSAO when you get here. We are a fun group and as you have seen on the web site, we're quite active. The price is right ($25/year), and if you buy a boat from Passion Yachts, they throw in the first year for free. :dance:Agreed!
