I would like to know how the keel of the Columbit ia attached. Is it inserted into the hull somehow, or is it simply bolted on the bottom. Also, if there is some bleeding rust, how hard is it to take the keel off and clean it up and reinstall it. Gaylen

how is the keel attached

The keel is bolted on it is made of cast iron any bleeding is coming through the bondo that is used to shape the keels final configuration. upon occasion the keel will have a small hole from the casting mold and will fill with water and leak out rusty looking water It would take a life time and alot of electricity in the marina to eat away the keel check your bolts in the bildge which are visible when you open the engine cover for condition best regards, JR

keel

My Columbia28 supposedly had the steel bolts rust and the keel dropped at the dock. The keel was not recovered (iron) and was replaced with a lead keel. This is only substanciated by the boot strip was raised. Lead heavier than iron would increase the displacement. The boat is also stiffer than others that I have experienced. I would be concerend if you have steel (even galvinized) bolts fastening your keel. Stainless! They could be galvanicly protected, but if you see rust bleeding I would attend to it ASAP. The bolts can be replaced one at a time in the water from the inside.
