I think I may have asked this question before.... I have new sails for my boat, but they are white on white. I also have many old sails as well, white on white. Just thought it would be nice to add some decoration to some of my old sails. These would only be used once in a while. Has anyone tried to paint a design on sails? I really don't want to sew a design in. What paint do you use? How long lasting was it? Any suggestions? Thanks, Mark Klein

Now the 2nd one I kind of like. The 1st one doesn't motivate me. Does any one know what paint / technique was used to produce these? Actually this photo from Sailing Anarchy is what made me think of this again.

I don't want anything this elaborate though... Just got me thinking again.

Here's one that sails at MDR. He almost got away so picture is not best. Since it is the rum I drink, I thought it was pretty cool. I just wonder if Malibu Rum paid for his printing or did they buy him the whole sail. They do large photo artwork on billboard now and there is a new one hanging from the NBC building in Burbank it seems like every other week. I imagine the process has become less expensive.

Only "colored" sail I have is spinnaker. You can have any sail made in any color. Just not traditional. By the way a bit of history. There was a "J" boat named Sphinx and the owner hoisted a sail that seemed to be an acre of cloth. They called it Sphinx Acre and thus the shortened term spinnaker. Now ya know. Fair Winds and Full Sails...

Plain ordinary acrylic house paint will work perfectly well. I have used it on vinyl car roofs and on painted tarpolins
