Collinite 870 verses 925

Getting ready to prep the boat for the 2008 sailing season. I have ordered a Porter Cable polisher and am planning on using Collinite based primarily on the posts in this forum. Our boat is a 2005 and the gel coat is in very good condition. Which product should I use Collinite 870 fleetwax or Collinite 925 WaxThanks in advanceMarc

I would be more concerned over the application

Do not apply or remove with a buffer. You will burn the wax. Apply by hand and remove by hand. If you use a mister when applying, and hand buff before it dries completely with a microfiber, it will be easy and last all season.

I've had good results with

the 925. I hand apply it with a damp sponge rinsing it when the build up on it causes too much friction to comfortably work it on. I remove it with a soft bath towel draped over both hands and continuously shaking out the residue. I've tried removing/polishing with a variable speed polisher with a terry cloth cover but it didn't work nearly as well as by hand and the terry cloth would clog quickly. Admittedly I don't have nearly the footage you do so my job isn't so bad. Now we just need spring. Looking not so great for us again this weekend. Maybe I'll see you around.

Be wary of the color difference - I believe the 925 is the light brown vs the white 870. I made the mistake of using the light brown one and there was definitely a tint residue after buffing which was not present when using the white wax. The tint wasn't obvious but it was enough to bother me to the point that I trashed the almost full 925 bottle.

Marc,IMHO - You are going in the right direction getting a Porter Cable orbital sander/buffer. Make sure you are using an orbital NOT A CIRCULAR buffer. The PC 7424-7426 is the same machine (orbital). A circular buffer takes some technique to avoid burning - damaging the gelcoat. The wax is the final protection for the boat surface, the shine comes from the pre-wax polishing stages.I use the Collinite 885 fleetwax, pure carnuba paste applied over a polished surface using foam pad (blue).
