I have been thinking about getting a portable generator for the boat and was looking to buy something like the Honda EU2000 but then I ran across the Coleman Powermate Premium Pulse 1850 Watt Generator that is about half the price as the Honda. Does anyone have any comments, experience on the Coleman?

You get what you pay for. The coleman is cheaper but is louder and heavier. You will be glad you bought the honda. Two friends of mine have the honda, I have the coleman, wish I bought the honda.

Great info links

I too have been considering the same question between the gen. sets. After reading then associated links, I'll save my money a little longer and buy the Honda!

...not only are the dB's different look at the fuel consumption specs. The fuel tanks are both 1 gallon. The Coleman will run 5 hours at half the rated load, while the Honda will run 15 hours at 1/4 load and 4 hours at full rated load. On a straight line interpolation the Honda consumes half the fuel.

HONDA!

Let me add one more vote for the Honda EU2000. I Have owned one now for a couple of years. It has been one of the best investments for the boat that I made. The unit is a lot quieter then the Coleman model, uses less fuel, and has been highly reliable. In this case, Jack is right; you do get what you pay for.

Practical Sailor recently rated the small generators. The Yamaha 1000 watt generator rated highest of the five tested (2 Hondas (one is the 2000 watt that you asked about), the Coleman 1850, and a 900 watt Briggs and Stratton). The Yamaha was slightly louder than the two Hondas, but significantly quieter than either the Coleman or the B&S, and it had better power control than the hondas. Reading between the lines, they rated the Coleman 5th out of 5. Steve Alchemist C-320
