When I unstepped the mast last fall I noticed some coins in the mast step. I remember reading something about this but could not find the reference. What is the premise behind placing the coins in the mast step and how much or what denomination should be used. Pat.

Silver dollars are nice

Mine has a silver dollar under the mast step. Suppose to be good luck. My last boat didn't have one. Total lose in Huricane Isabel. Maybe something to this?

Not a sunday church going type....

...but I do believe in the one up there. I decided to go with a small teak crucifix facing forward instead of the coin....rather gamble on god than silver. so far...still afloat. If she sinks, I'll use silver next time. abe

Never heard of this custom

Where do you put the coins, in the step or under? In other words if you have an access plate in the mast you could drop a coin in? I could use all the good luck I can get... Anybody know the history of this? Manny

Google Search

After posting here, I thought about a Google search. Found out that this started way back when with the Greeks to ensure passage to the after life in the event of a catastrophy. Still quite the custom even now. The USS Eisenhauer (Ike) has several sets of wings placed under the mast when it was set in place. My mast was stepped yesterday and I dropped 3 shiny new pennies into the Step plate. One for each us that have owned the boat. Never hurts to appeaze the superstition. Just hope it is enough! I saw what a number of years did to the three pennies that I pulled out. Barely noticable as coins. Silver Doller probably would not last long, but you never know. Thanks for the posts. I am starting to work on a photo collection for the repair of the Deck Compression problem and fix that I did. I want to tune the rigging and see what happens before I post the Photo message to the board. Pat. h-27 Largo.
