Always have our coffee in the V-Berth before starting the day. Just a good time to talk about the day ahead.

Melita coffee maker.

We use a Melita coffee maker. Just boil water and pour it through the unit. Drip coffee with or with electricity.

Coffee in french press

I love a good strong cup of black java in the AM. I used a melita for a while, until I once turned around in the cabin while it was dripping thru the filter and accidentally knocked it over. Ever try to clean coffee and grounds from your bulkheads, upholstery and electronics? Grounds are really tough to cleanup, and coffe really hard to clean if it dries, which it does quickly! Now I use a stainless french press/thermos combination made by Nissan. It presses out the coffee right into the thermos, and stays hot for about an hour. Makes about 6 cups. If I were to knock it over, it would only dribble out a few drops.

Beans

Good coffee comes from freshly ground beans, using spring water, and from the galley may be corrected with some kalua to keep the mood festive.

Peter, you can clean coffee

off of stainsless steel easily with ammonia. That is a trick I learned while repairing a few coffee makers at Stewart Brothers. Don't know what it might do to other finishes though. We like peppermint patties mixed and kept in a thermos on a cold evening. For those who do not know, a peppermint pattie is a mix of hot chocolate and peppermint schnapps and sometimes a few other additions I cannot remember. Keeps you warm all right.

Nissan french press

I orignally bought the Nissan french press at a local coffee shop in Stockton, CA. After a crew person was cleaning it, and lost the screen overboard, I went back to teh shop, and they had no more, and hadn't a source. I ended up buying it online from a kitchenware supplier. It's available for about $30 from Amazon, or several other places if you google "nissan french press"

Amateur question

Several boats that I've been aboard have old fashion coffee percolators. I grew up in as a member of the "drip generation." How do you make a good cup of coffee with these cans? Markdb

Peter, I think I just bought two....

Peter, Well, you got me into it this time. I just noticed on my e-mail that Amazon has two orders for the Nissan French Press being shipped to me. I must have hit the button twice. So I'll use one at home and one on the boat. Thanks for the adice. Les

Coffee

I drink coffee 24/7, and on the boat use and old fashion coffee pot. Perculator I guess. I like mine kind of stout, so I use New Orleans blend, with chickory. Fill a thermos before I haul anchor in the AM

Doesn't every cruising boat on the West Coast

have a french (freedom) press ? Somehow I never break it.

Peter, thanks for the tip

Amazon delivered my Nissan French Press Thermos yesterday and I used it at home this morning. It worked extremely well and it is heading for the boat tomorrow. It will make enough to keep me happy for about an hour or so. Us northwesters need our coffee. Now if someone could make a latte maker for the boat, it would be a beautiful world, eh? Thanks again for the tip. Les
