Coffee Aboard

How do you make coffee aboard? Is there a 12v coffee maker available that doesn't take 30 minutes to make half a pot? Or is it better to use a range-top percolator? I can use a regular coffemaker at the marina, but I'm not sure of the best (or safest) way to do this underway....

Melita!

Granville: Another way to make coffee if to boil water in a kettle and pour it through a Melita cone and filter. Just like a manual Mr. Coffee.

Oh boy, here we go again...

Hello, There's a veritable collection of ideas for making coffee aboard, and they can all be found under a post titled "How Do You Make A Good Cup Of Coffee" (Posted by Don Evans). A search for "Good Coffee" in the archives will produce more information than you'll be able to percolate in one sitting... ;o) Enjoy! --Jon Bastien H25 'Adagio'

Try a french press

I don't drink the stuff unless it has a frou-frou name and costs at least $2.50 but I've heard great things about french presses. LaDonna

Coffee under way

I agree that Melita is the way to go. I had to order one by mail (from somewhere in Florida - Clearwater, I think -) but I've had good results under way by boiling the water and pouring it through the Melita filter.

Buy a Thermos. . .

I've tried various methods to make coffee on-board but, BY FAR the easiest method is to make it at home and take it with you . . . .

Making it

Hello: As I understand it , your problem is, making coffee safely, underway. Answer is, "Seaswing stove". This is a gymballed, one pot stove that I have attached to main bulkhead. Propane bottle goes on bottom. It is perfect size for conventional size coffeepot. Have used it underway with no accidents yet. Good luck red

1000 Watt Inverter

Scott, I had a 1000 Watt Inverter installed on our new C36 so I could just plug in a Mr Coffee. I smaller inverter would work fine if that's all you wanted to do with it. Mine wall also run the TV/VCR and a laptop, basically anything under 1000 watts. I think I'll have to watch the batteries closely as you'll be able to run then down fast if not careful. I think a 200 watt is about 80 bucks. the 1000 watt was $1300 installed because it has and automatic transfer switch and is wired into the whole boat. Regards, Chris

Check a large truckstop

I prefer the French press method, but if you want other options, check out a large truckstop. They have 12volt items for truckers and have small percolators or dripmakers that use a cigarette lighter plug. They also have a nice supply of TV's and VCR's that run on 12volts. Forget the inverter unless you really need it for something else. Hairdryers, microwaves and Nintendo are about the only things I think require an inverter.

Cafe Catalina

I too use a French Press. Couldn't get much simpler, except for instant, ugh! I usually make it first thing in the morning and fill a thermos. If we stay at the mooring or in the slip, good premade coffee. If we get underway, good, SAFE, premade coffee. Win both ways.
