Has anyone figured out a way to keep the water out of the hole for the cockpit table? It always looks like a science experiment down there and last winter water froze in it and cracked it so fiberglassing was in order. I am thinking of making a cap but I thought I would ask for advise first. thanks Dave Oberholtzer "Hydrotherapy"

This was a simple one

Bought a 2"X 2" reciever cover for it. It is the same dimension as the table base. It does not keep 100% of the water out but alot of it. It also keeps it in the dark so stuff grows alot less.

Covers still leak

as Rick said, so what you could do is actually fill the hole. Not permanently of course, but fill the hole when not in use with the table. I'd use two inch dowel with varnish and polyurethane of some kind to keep it nice longer, but you could also cut off the top end of the appropriately sized wood plug if you have them onboard. In either case, filling the hole keeps everything out of it. Only problem: don't use balsa wood; it's so light, it would float out of the hole. Be sure to install a retrieval mechanism such as a pop-up key or ring so it is easily removed.

Tiller Lock

We had the same problem on our 23.5. HOW has a tiller lock that they sell that actually fits into the hole and keeps the tiller from moving. It's a little expensive but it does kill 2 birds with 1 stone, sort of speak. BTW I have been real happy with the tiller lock, its well designed and with no moving parts has never had a failure! Neglected to mention

I also use a reciever cover but I foamed it in so that it would displace the majority of the water in the hole. I bought the smallest one one that I could find, if I were to do it over I would buy the largest to shelter the hole from the rain. Seems like any water in there at all would freeze, pushing the plug up allowing more water in. When you put the boat up for the winter if you filled it up with some salt it that would keep it from freezing? Chemistry class was a long time ago what is the freezing point of a salt saturated water solution? Or how about a plastic bag full of sand over the top of it.

Fill the receiver cover

I use a 2 inch receiver cover too, but I filled mine with plaster. The plaster crumbles after a couple of years, but it's easy to just re-fill it. I suppose some type of plastic would also work, but being a dentist, plaster is so readily available.

Replace the plastic cover

I tried just covering the hole with a receiver hitch cover but wasn't satisfied with the water still getting in. So I removed the plastic top cover and bought a piece of 3/4 inch white plastic from a local shop. I cut it and shaped it to fit back in the hole, then routered off the top outside edge. Now when I cover it with the hitch cover there's a small lip to keep water out from the hole. This has worked really well for me. Good luck, Jim Covey s/v Wampeter

I use anti-freeze

I use the same receiver cover, but before I put her up for the winter, I fill the hole with marine/rv antifreeze. I also pour a little down each sink drain. I protects to -50 degrees.

Cooking Stool

I do a lot of cooking in the cockpit of my H26. I don't like bacon grease and eggs splattered all over the cabin bulkheads. I use a 2-burner propane, Coleman stove and set it on the seat of the cockpit to cook. There was never a convenient place to set though while turning the bacon or pouring the pancakes. So, I took a short 4 X 4, and whittled one end down so it just fit in the table leg holder. The part that fits inside is approx 2 X 2. I made that 2X2 part just long enough so it touches the bottom of the hole. The bottom of the post now touches the bottom of the hole and the big part of the 4X4 sets on top of the hole (all one piece of wood). Then I screwed a 12"X12", 3/4 in. seat onto the top of the post. Now, when I cook in the cockpit, it stick my little seat in the table leg holder and set there comfortably and cook. When I get done with it, I store it in the recess in from of the motor. Not much water can get in that hole with that post in there. Jim Schaff s/v Morning Glory
