From the Honey-Do list: After several months of storage, I found that the rotary volume control mounted next to the cockpit speakers on our P42 had corroded and seized. The home products available at Radio Shack etc. are much larger and probably less weather resistant. The alternative would be to install the control by the stereo at the nav station and only have an on/off switch at the helm. The other 3 controls in the salon and cabins are getting a little rough after ten years and will probably need replacement too. The stereo is a standard 115 volt home model. If anyone has found a marine grade soution, I would like to hear about it. Thanks

simple answer

I simply installed an on/off switch. can't adjust volume but can turn off sound to hear someone, talk to the shore or other boats, use the radio, etc. it works great and is a much more durable solution than a volume control. it is also a great way to ensure that I am not entertaining the entire harbor at night.

I found an exact matach at..

Fry Electronics here on the west coast. It was $13.00. I figure $13.00 every few years isnt worth worring about a marine grade version

The Fry's Electronics solution

I stopped in at Fry's Electronics in Manhattan Beach, CA yesterday to look for the volume control Dave mentioned. After the third salesman assured me they carried no such item, I found a stock clerk who told me to try aisle 12, and there it was. They have 8, 50 and 100 watt mono models, but only 8 and 100 watt stereo models. They have a standard and economy model of each, but the only difference seems to be the face plate. The economy models come with black plastic face plates and knobs identical to the original equipment on my P42, while the delux models have silver plates with db increments. Model SLP10 Stereo 'L' Pad - 100 watts RMS 8 ohms by Philmore of Rockford, IL sells for $16.99 (Fry's part # 1926392).

Remote Control Radio

I have the same concerns. Althoutgh our boat does not have a potentiometer at the speakers on the helm. I've been considering a remote control radio. This type is factory installed on the larger Hunter boats and has a touch pad (waterproof, I believe) at the helm. Adjust volume, station, CD, track, bass
