Has anyone installed cockpit speakers on an H28 or like cockpit. Where did you place them and what size/kind did you install. Also, when the speakers are on, do they interfere with the Compass?

Hi Terrance, we had two cockpit speakers
on our H28 installed by the previous owner. The round flush mount speakers were located on the stern lazaret forward facing bulkhead on each side just beneath the lid. They seemed to work great, but the plastic speaker face got beat up some by foot action. They had installed a plywood cover drilled with holes to protect the plastic face. I believe they were Jensen marine speakers. WM carries them. They were far enough away from the compass to cause no heading distortion. I had intended to replace the speakers, but sold the boat for a bigger one. I would put the speakers in the same location, but I would also install an enclosure on the back side to protect the wiring and speaker cone. You can use existing wiring runs to connect the speakers to its source in the main cabin. These runs were on the starboard side of our boat. Terry

I installed 2 pair of speakers in the cockpit of our 33. I st pair is in the lazarette, facing forward. They are mounted behind the stainless louvers that were orriginal equipment. They are 4" x 10" plastic cone type that I had kicking around. The mount is very simple. Two #10 round head screws per speaker, (one each at diagonal corners of the speakers), with 3 nuts per screw so that the screw is held firmly in place and the speaker stands off about 1/2' to 3/4" from the inside of the surface it's mounted on. The sound from this set is minimmaly compromised at most, they get no weather, and sound great. The second pair in the cockpit is mounted in Coaming boxes (West Marine 2002 catalog page 1004) I installed primarily for the speakers. 3" round speakers sit above the inside upper surface, firing through wide open holes. Completely protected from rain and spray, and they sound great also. The sound is surprisingly good and there is not a speaker visable in the cockpit. For the record, inside the saloon there is another pair, box speakers (Horizon if I recall), mounted inside the twin, port and starboard hanging lockers aiming up and out so the sound bounces up into the room, yet the speakers again are not visable.

I have a 1990 27 with rail mount speakers that have pulpit/stantion clamps on them. I remove them each time and store them inside. Saves exposure to the elements and I can mount them anywhere I choose to. Brand is Jenson, 5X9X4 box, sound great. They were on the boat when I purchased don't know where they were bought. Jim

Removable Cockpit Speakers Good Idea
Removable cockpit speakers is a really good idea because not everybody wants large magnets anywhere near their compass! Removing cockpit mounted speakers where someone cut large holes is not a viable option as the holes are too large to fill in. Replacement speakers may not exactly cover up any holes (screw or speaker). The other argument about keeping speakers out of the elements is excellent. If you appreciate quality sound then the flexible cones and close-tolerance voice coils must be kept in very good condition. Sun and dampness or rain is very hard on any speaker so having them removable would protect them. Another option to consider is a boom box. It would be portable and everything is all together, and some have removable speakers.

However, you must buy good quality marine speakers as they are outside all the time and, also, you do not want water leaking into the lazarette through cheap speakers!! I would also recommend speakers with smooth faces and small holes for the sound to get out--less chance for foot damage as they will be only a few inches from the cockpit floor. Mine have no effect on the compass, however, if you wanted you can buy sheilded speakers than can be placed in close proximity to the compass with no effect--but tend to be pricey.

This is what I did
I mounted the boxed speakers with the style clamps use to mount the binnacle table in the cockpit. The short wire plugs into a waterproof plug, so I can take the speakers below when I leave the boat.

I have the same type clamps on mine, I use a 2 wire external plug much like the four wire flat plug used on a trailer light hook up, got them at Walmart. Jim

There is a review of cockpit stereo speakers, but even better is a sidebar suggestion of how to mount speakers inside the lazarette and use regular metal or plastic screw-in deckplates as removable protective covers. These would protect the speakers when you're away from the boat or during heavy weather. It's the way I plan to go on my Hunter 28. Martin Cole s/v Ares
