Has anyone installed stereo speakers in the cockpit area of their 260? I occasionally like to hear some Jimmy Buffett while playing on the water. Up to this point I have had to turn up the cabin volume very loud in order to hear it at the helm seat. I am thinking about installing some 6.5" coax speakers on the helm seat base. Any better ideas out there? Boat Drinks Doug

With some work, I'm happy with mine

I hung speakers from the bottom of the stern rail seats. It makes for a pretty good "surround sound" with the cabin speakers. Also, you can hear them well while swimming. I drilled a hole from the inside of the hull through the center of the three screws mounting the lower part of the stern rail seat in order to run the wires up the inside of the tubing. Then I drilled a hole in the side of the tube just under the seat. I fished a string to pull the wires. I trailer the boat long distances sometimes so I replaced the stock coated metal speaker hangers with ones I made of stainless steel for durability. The corded remote control in the cockpit is geat too. Good Luck, Joe C. in NC '01 H260 Windward Passage

I was thinking of installing small speakers in the cockpit of my H260 also, as a winter project. My choice of location was under the stern rail seats facing forward - the sound would be at ear level and less on the cockpit floor. Since they are under the s/r seats they are protected from the rain and sun. I also cover my seats with "sunbrella" fabric covers when not in use. I would make larger covers to better protect the speakers. I will also use removable wire clip/fittings since I remove my s/r seats in the winter and store in the cabin. My concern is how can I interface these speakers with my cabin mounted AM/FM radio AND cabin mounted VHF radio. Any thoughts? Good luck on the install and I hope we get to see some pictures. Bob.

I installed a pair of speakers on my Hunter 30. I placed them on the port side underneath the hatch board storage area. This was very easy to get to. A cockpit is not that big and these produce great sound, just right. I changed the balance wires from the right and left speaker to the cabin and cockpit, this works great. It is worth the time. Good Luck, Ken

On my 23.5 I installed the two prong electrical plug on the cockpit side of the transom. I then used the rail barkets that are used for a BBQ to mount the speakers to. The two plugs have small holes, I was concerned about the large hole of a flush mount speaker. They sound really good and with the waterproof plug I have no leaks.

The most recent issue (Jan 2003) of "Practical Sailor" has a good article including comparisons and mounting tips for cockpit speakers. One thing they pointed out, and I hadn't considered, was that two 5" speaker mounting holes, if deluged by one foot of water on deck, have the capacity to fill your boat with nearly 1000 gallons, or almost 4 TONS of water per MINUTE! They show an installation with speakers mounted behind deck plates with screw on lids to secure them during inclement weather (a neat idea which doesn't add additional windage or clutter to the cockpit.) I see that you have an auto-pilot. What model is it? Also, where did you get the helmsmans seat cushion? -Tom M.

Previous owner did these upgrades. I am hoping to match the helmsmans cushion with the available settee cushions from this site. Out on the water again today. This year's weather has started out great here in Texas!
