I have seen alot of boats with wood inserts for the cockpit sole. Where are these purchased? Are they custom made? Some of them look real nice. Thanks Dale

Custom building my own

this winter, It'll be a nice winter project and will look good next spring, I'm also covering it with ultre sole so it'll be non skid and still have a great shine to it

Had one

I can't disagree Dale that they look great but be careful what you wish for... We had a teak grate built for our last boat and it was definitely an improvement from the blah typical non-skid cockpit sole but what I didn't realize is how uncomfortable it would be to stand on with bare feet. If you prefer to go shoe-less in the cockpit, you might regret it like I did. On our present boat, I have a $3 throw rug behind the wheel. It looks terrible but at my age, comfort over form always wins.

Comfort

I gave teak grates in my cockpit and have no problem bare footed. I suspect the problem may be the space between spars. One inch is comfortable for me.

I am thinking about one

Everyone I've ever seen looks great. Now I am thinking about the comfort. What size were your squares that were the holes? I was thinking about three quarter inch squares. Something that wouldn't be too, too uncomfortable. I just really don't like the sand and debris that ends up on the cockpit sole. Now it always looks so dirty.I've had quotes from $750 to $900. Most were in the $85.00 a sq ft range.Just send a paper pattern of you sole. Most likely they have a pattern already. Keep it up, Ctskip

hole size

In response to CTskip's question, my old grate had holes that were 3/4 inch square - any larger and they'd probably be dangerous. Apparently some folks are making them with slats rather than the conventional square holes which might feel different if you like that appearance.

Contact Ken at Teakflex

Teakflex (www.teakflex.com) built teak grates for our shower and head. They were a little slow but they did a great job. Since they are in our shower everyone walks on them in their bare feet and love them. Total price was $437.00 You can see them at www.sailingseadragon.com Then "Projects" and "Grates"

Measure twice, cut once

This summer I rebuilt the cockpit sole of my Cheoy Lee Offshore 27. It was a bit like a jigsaw puzzle. I bought resawn teak from an eBay dealer that was 1/2" X 15/16". Total cost for materials, about $65.00

Bill ,I am envious

And you did all that with a router? I am impressed. My carpentry skills leave much to be desired. I have seen teak for sale on ebay many times and wondered about cutting my own slats and doing it just like yours. Thanks for the pictures, I'm sure I'll be referencing them in the future. I see that you have them raised off the sole with runners. I hadn't thought of them. I question the thickness if the slats and wonder about the flexibility of the teak. I sure don't want it cracking under foot. How thick was the entire grate off the sole? The risers and the actual grate? A inch and a half maybe? I figure 3/4 riser and 3/4 grate. Maybe a 1/2 inch riser would work. And the slats, 3/4 by 3/4?. Now I just have to do this for my cockpit. I'm sure you just love it. You should be proud it, it looks grate! Thanks, your photos will be in my "archives" from now on. Keep it up, Ctskip PS: No matter how many times I cut the board, it's still short!

Thanks for the compliments

The skids (runners) are to allow water to flow easily to the scuppers. They are about 1/4" high. The grates are a little over 1" thick overall, including the skids. I don't notice any flexing. I had to use shims on the jig I made to keep the width 15/16". None of the new pieces fit after I made them. They all had to be filed a lot. I hope I don't have to do this again.

Bill

I know the photos don't show all the blood, sweat and tears. Never mind the scraped knuckles. I was thinking about getting some teak and cutting my own slats and cutting out the grooves where they interlock. I'm just not sure on the measurements. every one I have seen has been done in panels. I would like to do mine in maybe two or max three panels. Near the scuppers. After all it is a custom floor. And why would I have to lift it up anyway? All thats under them is the scuppers? Maybe if I drop the hope diamond down there. But ,wait , that'll be big enough to stay on the top. Ya think? Thanks again, and if and when, I do ever get this project near the top of the todo list. I'll post some pictures and give you as my inspiration for it. Thanks again. Keep it up, Ctskip

price of teak

after reading the thread, and seeing the cost of some finished teak soles, i might suggest stopping by your local tractor dealer. kabota's tractors are often crated in teak and other woods. the dealer here just hauls it all home and sets it a blazed. the dimensions need to make a sole could easly be made from some select wood out of these crates, for free.
