Got a question for owners of O'day 25's: I just bought a '76 and in the process of fixing her up. I've noticed that the cockpit sole has a "spongy" feel when you walk on it. I don't see any stress cracks or crazing in the floor. Have any other owners experienced this and what did you do to correct it?

My Plan is to cut the cockpit sole about 4 to 6 inches from the sides with a router and lift the deck out,remove whats left of the balsa core and replace with marine plywood or a plastic sheet(sea board)the Im going to put the cockpit sole back down and epoxy the cut area.To hide the sin I'll install a teak grate.

Provide bulkhead support
I had a similar problem on my 25, the cockpit sole was cracked and the core had rotted. On looking underneath I realized nothing supported the entire cockpit area. What I did was this, first I epoxied a piece of 1" marine plywood to the underside of the sole, I held it in place with stainless screws every 8" on either side. Next I made a support bulkhead and attached it to the plywood reinforcement at the center of the piece and down to the hull. I tabbed the bulkhead to the hull and the sole support. Now that the sole was fully firm and supported I cut out the damaged core, did an epoxy fill, and reglassed the cockpit sole area. As I was repainting the entire boat anyway, it all blended in.
