I've looked for teak grate flooring without much luck (hard to find and very pricy). I did see a boat that had a dark rubber mat with many small round holes that looks like it would do. Where can I find this product? I searched the internet without any luck.

I could see the need

Having once jumped from the coaming to the cockpit after raising sail singlehanded in a breeze and having my feet fly up so my back came down across the keel winch board..., I laid there, steering the tiller with my foot until I could move, to keep off the docks. It was loud enough that folks partying by the ramp all stopped to see what happened.

WHY?

Well, it looks better, helps keep the cabin sole cleaner and it helps keep your feet dry. Sometimes spray can get on the cockpit floor and before it completely drains, your shoes can get wet. The grate is about 1/2 inch or so high and keeps your feet above the little bit of water sloosing around Also it gives you a little more traction Plus I like the way it looks

dri-tek

I have the dri-tek (jrpla's suggested product) on the sole of my cockpit. I agree, it keeps your feet dry and it hides whatever dirt is lurking on the sole. however, it does have one drawback that periodically makes me consider taking it out: when I put my feet down on it while heeling, it can slide out from underfoot. Very annoying and potenially dangerous. I have had some close calls. I am always trying to think of ways to prevent this from happening, but the product is not rigid enough to avoid bending at the edge when you put sufficient sidewards force on it. If you think of a solution, I am all ears.

look at restaurant supply

I spent most of my misspent youth slinging cocktails. In bars and kitchens they use a thick rubber mat with holes in them. One purpoose is to defeat fatigue! The other is to keep your feet dry and avoid fallin on your ass. I did a quick google search and came up with this one 3 x 5 for $69. http://www.acemart.com/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=AND4203-5&Related=True I'm sure there are others. You might try restaurant supply houses in your phone book. Mike

non-skid

I've seen the interlocking squares at Costco for substantially lower price, same quality or better than west marine. To keep them from slipping, install a molding strip. If you're having drainage problems in the cockpit, you might consider adding a couple more drain outlets to clear the water faster. My preference would be a quicker draining cockpit over adding another maintenance item. You can find the rubber mats at any restaurant supply house but they aren't designed for outdoor use. I don't recommend them, becuase they are somewhat flat on the bottom preventing the water from draining well which allows the holes to fill with water. Very quickly you will get a lot of "mung" in the holes so your maintenance time will increase. Restaurants pressure wash the mats almost daily, (at least mine did). Another proplem is that they may stain your gel coat, in the same way dark, rubber soled shoes will. Think of you car mechanic walking around in your wet cockpit with his work shoes......
