Today I implemented a very simple and cost-effective way to solve the
cockpit sole fastening issue, using 8 brass expansion plugs. They have
an internal M6 thread and 8mm outside diameter and can be purchased at
almost any hardware store.
1. Drill out the existing holes to 7mm.
2. Take a 8mm round (tapered) file and insert it through the bottom of
the hole.
3. Fasten the part of the file that sticks out in a (hand) drill and
pull the drill while it turns. This creates a tapered hole with 8mm at
the bottom (inside cockpit) and 7mm at the top (deck).
4. Stick the brass expansion plug in the hole from the bottom (inside
cockpit).
5. Take one of the 6mm sole fastener bolts and add a large ring. Screw
the bolt and ring from the top into the expansion plug and tighten so
that the expansion plug is pulled inside the hole and sets itself.
The work took about 45 minutes and cost of material is 5,80 EUR.
