After reviewing the archives on this forum, I have been unable to locate anyone who has admitted having a cockpit/mid-boom traveler mounted for their mainsheet on the OD'22. While many have fessed up to either liking/living with the OEM backstay mounted system or described their dinghy-like rope traveler systems, I haven't seen anything about a mid-boom, cockpit seat mounted system. Anybody got one? Am I the only fool who is more concerned about true mainsheet adjustability and control than the ergonomics of cockpit comfort and unbanged knees?Forging ahead blindly/boldly, I have already ordered a Garhauer mainsheet traveler system [MT-1](track, cars and end blocks with cam cleats for c. $214.50 vs. $300.00 to $500.00 for Harken's name-brand version) and have planned to span the cockpit seats just ahead of the starboard lazarette opening. I'm going to thru-bolt the track to a 1" stainless square tube across the seats, through the seats to 3/4" King Starboard backing plates underneath with ss fender washers and nylock nuts underneath that. Over the "span", I'm planning to drill and tap the stainless tubing to thread in the track bolts so there are no exposed nuts/screw ends underneath the track to grab my shins, legs or other errant body parts. Based on my evaluation, this placement should put the traveler just aft of mid-boom.As far as the boom attachment, I've purchased (2) stainless bails which will attach with 1/4"-20 bolts run all the way through the boom, nylock nutted on the other ends. I'm planning to attach one bail about 6" to 12" forward of the track position and the other about 6" to 12" aft of the track position (I'll "eyeball" it for exact fit once the track is mounted). My thinking here is that the two bails will give me equal pull and tension spreading across the boom rather than a single stress point pulling straight down--less chance of permanently bending the boom. This will also act somewhat like an additional vang. I will mount a single block with becket and swivel on the forward bail and a single block with swivel on the aft bail [Garhauer stainless "lite" blocks]. I will mount a fiddle block with cam and swivel on the traveler. This should allow me to dead-end the mainsheet (maybe with an eye splice if I get really rambunctious) on the becket of the forward block, reave it down to the top sheave of the fiddle block, on through to the single block on the aft bail, on through, over that sheave and forward back to the sheave of the single block on the forward bail and back down through the lower sheave and cam cleat of the fiddle at the traveler car [ending up with a triangular-shaped arrangement for the mainsheet, point down at the traveler track]. I believe this will afford me more than enough purchase and sheeting power and fully anticipate having to re-tune my standing rigging to compensate for the now-missing backstay tension formerly supplied by the mainsheet. The traveler car will be controlled by a single, continous line (like a bridle) which I will leave long enough to be used from the aft-most position of the cockpit.I know I will be losing what little room there was before in the cockpit and making it somewhat more difficult to go below than before but I'm looking to race my little boat rather than cruise around. It was never designed to be a "go fast machine" but I'm trying to tweak and trick her out the best I can for PHRF racing. For light air, she should be a killer with a rating of 276. I also considered the aft-mounted traveler over the tiller on risers (as some have done)but the hinging issue with the tiller as well as the thought of having to look aft even momentarily to adjust the traveler while racing dissuaded me from that concept. I am convinced to the point of obsession (can't you tell) that my plan is the most feasible.I'll try and post some photos of the project once I get it all in (next couple of weeks) but I would love to hear about and/or see what anyone else has done along this line (surely I'm not alone in this vein)...Rich Lemmler, Jr.s/v TIME BANDIT, OD'22
