While on deck lockers are adequate on the 295, I'd like to enlarge the starboard cockpit locker. The aft berth below the cockpit is long enough to accomodate most NBA players but I am only 6'1". I'd like to cut as large an opening as practicle in the sole of the cockpit locker opening it to the berth below and partioning this space to create a huge storage locker. This would be a similar configuation as many other boats in the 30' range. My concern is that I could create a structural weakness. Has anyone attempted this or have any sage advice?

I believe you would be strengthening the area you are considering making into an expanded locker. You would in principal be adding an additonal bulkhead in this area. You would want to make sure you glass it all in nicely and ensure you use enough glass to make it good and strong. Good luck.....

Just one hazard
If you take a large wave over the stern (or through in your case) and the locker gets push/swooshed/or blown open, you now out lottawatta in you stern...she bogs down further..swoosh, wave #2..she bogs more...uhoh...you'r sinking. SO, make sure you seal it to the hull and deck

Now that I think about your idea more, I wonder if you could mount the AC in the space below the locker? Sure would be a better use than what it is now huh? Cool air directly into the aft stateroom and the head? Hmmmmm

A/C or Wind Scoop
On the same theme, could a wind scoop device be designed to vent fresh air down below via that aft locker? Food for thought indeed.
