cockpit locker 'installation', opening things up...

Good day all,

The boat is a 78, 30' Hunter.

There is only one cockpit locker and it's on the starboard side.

The rear 'seat' is just that, doesn't open. Nothing on the port either as there is a quarter berth there.

What is the prescribed solution to this issue. That is, is cutting around the curved lips or just opening a hole and making a 'lid' for the cockpit locker to be. Seems to me that cutting around the curved lip would be stronger from a seating standpoint.

I'd hope someone has faced, and resolved, this issue. No lockers is not an option for me.

Never knew that about the H30. Was it true of all the years I wonder? I carry a ton of stuff back there on my H37C. And it is how I get access to the rudder stuffing box and steering radial wheel. The simplest solution would be a hatch or two( http://www.thechandleryonline.com/product_info.php?cPath=440&products_id=1207 ). But still limits your access and the size of things you can store. I checked "Hunter Owner Mods" and no one mentioned it. From Steve Dion's emergency tiller project I can see what you mean, just a solid curved seat.

I don't understand your question. Are you saying there is an aft (center of the cockpit) hatch that does not open (lazerette?)? Like once it opened and now it doesn't? Is this a new boat to you? Sometimes hatches are locked from the inside. Sometimes a line is attached the the underside of the hatch and then it leads forward into the cockpit somewhere to a cleat. This way it can be locked down from inside the boat and a hasp and lock doesn't have to be installed on the outside. Usually/sometimes under the middle aft helm seat there is the top of a rudder post and so if you have wheel steering this might not be seen from the cockpit. Perhaps yours is on the floor. Not sure what your question is.

Gentle folk, Bill, no holes in the boat except the starboard locker. No hatches elsewhere in the cockpit. Ed, the 78 is this way, the later boats are not. You and DJ had the answer. DJ hit the nail on the head. Wow, simple solution, thank you. I know what to do to solve the issue now. Once again, you folks came through. Many thanks. Jim

I do not think that any of these add on hatches are going to work. They will need a flat surface to work.

Think about another model. Many of the newer boats have shallow/fewer lazarettes due to aft cabins and more "living space" down below.

Steve, you mean the top, the actual seat, is not flat enough for a hatch? And what about "another model"? Do you mean hatch or boat? He owns the boat and he should trade for one with opening stern cockpit lockers? :)

Ed: None of the seats are flat enough to cut one of those hatches into the seat.

Ed,

Steve makes a VERY good point (though I doubt I'll trade my boat off) :naughty:

My plan is to make radiused pieces of hardwood (sealed with epoxy) that fit the 'difference'. I just don't think it will be an issue as the difference isn't that great.
