OK, I went for the knob solution. I bought a bag of 2" diameter maple knobs and drilled, counter drilled to match the original design. Bought some longer screws for mounting.
I put two coats of West System epoxy on the knobs and mounted them with new loop lines. The line length was 35" before making the loop. Passed the end of the loop over the standing part and then onto the knob. The lines are held with the standing part of the loop line and the end of the loop passed over the knob.

They look like they will work. My originals were all broken after 25 years.

Looks good. Put some varnish on them to protect the knobs from UV or they will cloudy and the epoxy will degrade.

Looks very nice, practical and cost-effective. That is exactly what I was thinking, except I thought I would mount mine on a board to limit the # of holes in the fiberglass. But you already had the homes from the old ones, so might as well use them.
