Cockpit Grates

I am an original owner of a 1984 Hunter 37 cutter and would like to pass on to those inquiring about this model that I am still happy with mine. Holding tank has been replaced as others have mentioned. No leaks to complain about other than mast partners which I have not worked on this year. I came upon a small source of mahogany so I built a set of cockpit grates. It eliminates the wet feet when a Bayliner goes by with a large wake. The crossed cockpit drains seem to pump in a quick roll which in this area (Seattle area) means cold feet. I never bothered with it when I was in Corpus Christi, Tx. I have attached a picture of the home made grates. I will need to replace some ports in a few years. If anyone has done it please let me know where to find replacements. Thanks Fair winds

Agreed, very nice.

Those grates look great! :) I replaced all my H37C portlights with bronze from Newfound Metals. Not something that I would recommend. Very difficult to install. Portlights that are exactly like you have now are still available. West Marine/US Boat/Sailnet can all get them but they will come from Pompanette. You need to call to see which one has the best price. See Related Link.

Deck grates

Looks very nice..Do you still have the drawings...measurements? MYST could use them..We have 7 of 11 ports, ss ones to go in..Shape is going to be a bit different, so I plan on cutting a cedar plank to shape and thickness, then cutting the hole for the port, "painting" the plank with WEST system, then scabbing them in with West...We are planning on painting anyway, so this should all fit into the plan...Will let you know how it goes when we actually get started on it..

ED..... HOPE YOU READ THIS.....

Hey Ed, don't mean to hi jack this thread, but you mentioned using cedar to set your SS ports in and just painting the wood with epoxy? I would approach that differently... Remove old port, clean out old soft or rotten wood, cut pieces of new wood out of marine plywood of proper thickness, epoxy this in place and after sanding away gelcoat on existing edges, lay fiberglass mat and cloth to add structural strength, then shape out the new opening to fit your new ports, then fair and smooth out to be level with surrounding surfaces, paint and then install your new SS ports. Thing is, I fear the cedar is too soft of wood to holdup under the presure of the clamping force of the SS port. Also, expoxy will crack if the wood compresses because the epoxy will not have the structual strength of the cloth and mat, and the cedar will have too much "give". Check with others, don't just take my word for it, but best of luck and hope your new port project turns out real nice.

OOOOOPPSSS

Did I Say cedar??? I ment cypress...I would think that it should be tough enough..rot resistant, etc..and yes, I plan on using matt, cloth etc...But was going to try and do as much in the shop as possible...Thanks.. Ed

Grate measurements

I do not have any measurements. I built three square grates larger than the three final ones needed. I then made three frames right in the cockpit using a hand miter saw. 3/4 inch thick, 2 1/2" wide. The joints are all splined. I then laid the frame over the square grate to get the final shape. I cut a 1/2 inch rabbit on the bottom side of the frame with a router and a corresponding dato on the top side of the grate and glued the two together. It sounds easy but beleive me it was quite a project. This project took a lot of wood. I used 4 planks 2x6x12' (~50 board feet) of Mahogany. Fortunately the mahogany was free from an old dock (100 years old). Before you ask, I do not have any more available. My wife has another project for the remaining scraps. Fair winds. Don
