Hey, guys...

I've had three emails in the past 24 hours from people who are relatively new to sailing and don't find threads like this especially confidence-building. I am all for correcting erroneous information, but it should be done in a respectful and courteous manner. It's really not that hard to do. Flame contests like we've had in this thread will be deleted and in some cases, people will be blocked from posting. It is our goal to make this forum a safe place for novice sailors to ask questions. Please help support that culture here.

seacocks and water level ?

Isn't the sole of the cockpit mostly high enough above the waterline that even if the cockpit sole were below the waterline and completely dry there wouldn't be enough cockpit flotation to keep the boat up? The cockpit drains by gravity because the water in the cockpit is higher than water outside the cockpit right? Doesn't a seacock stop water from flowing either way? so that if it were closed and water got in it couldn't get out. I think my question is "will the boat stay afloat as long as outside water stays out?" actualy the longer I keep rephrasing here the deeper it gets and i'm begining to think there's a lesson here.
