Cockpit drains where?

I am buying a 1981 Hunter 36 next week. The boat has had rainwater intrusion and I know part of this is from a leaky engine cover in the cockpit floor. The scuppers have no mesh/slotted covers on them and do not drain well. (The boat hasn't been taken care of) I found this out by taking a water hose and putting water through them. They did not drain very well and I soon found the bilge to be full of the water I had just ran through the cockpit drains. I have not had time to trace the hoses so my question is this: Do the cockpit drains drain into the bilge? I looked underneath the transom and didn't find any holes other than the exhaust. Is this a common practice on boats? Thanks for the advice.

The H36 guys will know for sure. But on my H37C the port scupper hose went to a thru-hull on starboard, right through the bootstripe. And vice versa of course. I had one of these hoses come disconnected with the same result as yours. In my stern lockers you have to lift up covers to see down in there. Possibly you need to remove the cockpit engine cover to get to the hoses. A feature the H37C does not have.

There is no way they drain into the bilge...unless something is broken.

They may drain below the water line

The exit port may be below the water line.

Thanks for the replies. It did not seem like they would design a boat that way. But you contemplate these things when you are at work for the weekend and cannot go down to the boat and take a look.

Charlie Morgan designed my Out Iand with cockpit drains going to sea cocks mounted well below the water line.

Mine cockpit drain used to go to a gate valve and then to a below the water line through hull. They were each 3/4 inch. I glassed over all of that and ran a pair of 2 inch drains out the transom with anti back flow traps on them.

It is not uncommon for a hose to come off of the deck drain fitting so that water drains into the hull instead of outside the boat. I suggest you get your butt down under and check the status of the hoses. Could be just a loose hose clamp.
