Cockpit drain

Hello,I bought my C22 about three weeks ago and have been working on it since. I'm close to putting it in the water and am just wondring what the routine should be with the cockpitdrain valve. Is it suppose to be open onlywhen sailing? Also, I had a bit of a time draining water fromall the seperate compartments. Has anyonedrilled holes between adjacent compartmentsso more water would be in fewer places?Bad idea?Thanks,-tap

tap, I leave my C22 in the water all season. I also leave the drains open... don't want the cockpit to fill with water when I am not around. As for drilling holes..... probably not a good idea to drill holes in a boat.Hope this helps,Jason

Cockpit drain and holes in compartments

My 1972 C22 never had a valve on the cockpit drain. So, you probablydon't have to worry about closing it when you are not around...in fact if you store it outside, the cockpit will fill up with water and that would be unpleasant to come back to before a nice day on the water. Just leave it open.As to drilling holes in the compartments. There is no reason you couldn'tdo this. I often wash out the interior of my boat before the spring seasonand just remove all the cushions and then go crazy with the hose. I then use a shop vac to suck out the water from each little compartment. It is not dangerous to drill holes in the interior walls, but be careful when you are closeto the hull as you don't want to risk putting a hole in the wrong place by slipping with the drill.Kev.

Pretty good idea, really. As Kevin mentioned, just be careful that you don't drill a hole in the bottom! But even if you did (assuming you did it while on the hard), you can patch it up easily enough.LaDonna

I see why not

I considered this same thing, then it occured to me. If the hull is ruptured do I want water in one compartment or 7-9 compartments! Just something to think about.

Cockpit drains

Tim, Most definitely leave the cockpit drain valve open at all times, and make sure that they dont get stopped up with debris. I Keep my C22 on the trailer at a marina and early last fall I went to check on her after a couple of nasty storms and found the drains clogged. The cockpit filled up and overflowed into the cabin, but luckly I only had about 7" of water inside and there was no damage just a big MESS!Barry BroylesNorth East, Md.LTBROYT6D@cs.com
