Hi folks I have to replace the cockpit drain hose in my Oday 222. Im not sure if I can reach down and around that far, or my other plan was to instal an inspection port on insdie of transom. Now sitting here at work thinking about this I am wondering if instead of an inspection port is it possible and beeter Idea to remove the wooden bulkhead that seperates the stern bilge area from the inside cabin area and crawl back that way. Boat is sort of new to me so never really looked at the wooden bulkhead very close. I do know a section of fiberglass goes part way up to keep water from getting to cabin living area and front bilges. Maybe its too close quarters to crawl back in. maybe hose is easier to reach than I am thinking???? Thanks all: Eric

Hi Eric, I just replaced the hose and thru hull fitting on my 23 O'day this spring. I was able to wriggle down and get at it through the storgae locker in the cockpit. While you are changing the hose I recommend that you inspect the thru hull fitting closely for cracks, and change it if required. That can really ruin your whole day if it should start leaking! While you are at it take a good luck at the hose and thu hull for the sink as well. Good luck. George

Eric, Your best bet is to install an 8 inch deck plate in the center of the transom. Removing the plywood bulkhead in the cabin won't get you access to the transom. I've already tried that. If you want to try going through the cockpit hatch to get at it, make sure that you have someone there just in case you get stuck. I've been there and done that too. Anyway, the deck plate will also give you access to the Gudgeons. I was able to remove both of my Gudgeons and re caulk them and reinstall them by myself with no problem. I replaced my self-bailing hose with a nylon 90 degree fitting, two pieces of hose and four stainless steel hose clamps. It drains a lot better now than the single hose with the kink in it that was installed at the O'Day factory. Look back in the archives and you'll find a lot of threads and Pics on this subject. Joe

Thanks all for the tips.. I just read them . I did however change the thru hulls and the hose this past weekend. I did it through the storage hatch. What a job. My ribs and arms are actualy black and blue from the beating. Its so hard to get in the right possition to screw in the thrull hulls etc. Just changing the hose would not be that bad. Next time I will certainly put in the access port. I had a hunk of rope attached and down with me in case I got stuck. It is a real concern. head first like that one could slide in and not be able to breath from the pressure on rib cage etc. But anyway I left the 5200 fast cure set up from Fri noon until Sun, morning around 10 A.M. Longer than the say but I didnt want to take chances. No leaks so far. It will be nice to have a dry aft bilge. The hose was so rotted it disinigrated as I was removing from fittings. And the fittings just snapped too as they were so brittle. Glad job is done. Thanks again for the tips. Eric
