Hey all – Thinking about my winter projects this year. One is an idea I can up with to make custom cushions for the cockpit of my ’78 Catalina 30. Not the cushions you sit on but seasonally-mounted cushions for the sides of the cockpit. I would use ribbed-white vinyl over 2” closed-cell foam stapled and wrapped around ¼ marine grade plywood with mounting screws. I would make 2 along the sides and 1 along the back to serve as back-rests and provide softer/pleasing look to the cockpit. Anyone ever try this or should I leave it to a profession to fabricate? I don't race - just cruise and looking to make the boat as comfortable as possible. Thanks and looking forward to opinions on this. Rob

Resale

Just a thought, here - we all have different tastes. From my perspective I wonder if this would make your boat look too power boatish which could turn away some prospective buyers if you sell down the road. I have somewhat traditional leanings when it comes to what a sailboat should like it. I hope I did not offend.

See your point

Thanks Higgs and very good point. I would use very simple attachment nuts -bolt arrangement to temporarily hold them in place - that way I could remove them in the winter and permantly if I sell the boat. Good point on the power boat issue...

Rob, Do you need to back them with

plywood tho ? Why not vinyl on both sides with snaps to hold them, similiar to your average seat cushion ?

You don't have to worry

the resale value lost will be minimal based on the current evaluation for a 1978 Catalina 30. If it turns you on I say do it!

Good Idea

Then all I need to mount them are snaps which will not detract from the resale value of the boat should I try to sell it. How would I get the Vinyl to wrap around though? Glue of some type? I am not good with a sewing machine...

Hate to rub it in but the best part of the

cruising season is just starting here, weather in September, October & November is great and the crowds are gone. I'd figure out what size cushion and go to an auto/boat upholstery shop at least 100 miles from the nearest marina and see what they would charge to run them up.
