I have a 1988 Pearson 27, and would like to get cockpit cushions for it. I've seen catalog ready-made cushions for under $30 each, while custom-made would cost close to $500. Does anyone have any experience in this area? Thanks for your input.

Closed Cell Experience
We had custom closed-cell foam cockpit cushions on our Pearson 28 when we bought it. They're great! Not being fabric, they don't stain, rot or need much cleaning. Just wipe 'em. Regretfully, we sold them to another Pearson 28 owner at sea level, 'cause after we hauled the boat from the Puget Sound to Utah, they expanded in the high altitude! Increased over 2" in length and 1" in width! No experience with the "off-the-rack" cushions, but we'll pop for the $800 custom cushions for our O'Day 34. Michael O'

Purchased custom made closed cell cushions covered with Sumbrella fabric to match sail cover. After 3 years they look like new.They can be washed and dry fast.You don't stick to them when you get sweaty.I had snaps put on so they stay put.Cost about $500 and worth it.

Ed: Some of these less expensive cushions are not fitted for your seat. The custom cushions are also vinyl coated. This make cleaning them very easy. The down side of these cushions is that they tend to be very warm in the summer months. The advantage is that when it is raining or damp, you can just wipe them off and they are dry. We have terry cloth covers for ours. The main reason for the covers is our family member (dog) that always has dirty, wet feet. They covers keep them cool and dry too.

The low $$ way
I have 4 Igloo cooler top cushions,I picked the two size cooler tops that were the same as my cockpit seats,(lots of sizes,all white)they come with snaps to hold to lid,but works fine to hold to seats.It's a 30' footer so I needed 4,still only came to $150 for all 4.
