I relocated my '83 diesel control panel from from its awkward location at foot level to waist level on the port seat back. Has anyone else made this modification and why the original dumb factory location:confused:

Because the boat most likely came with a tiller, so the skipper was sitting all the time.

AA, I own a 1984 Catalina 30 and I would like to do the same. Getting too old to bend under the wheel any more. Would you share some of the problems associated with the move. Did you replace anything? How did you cover/paint the old location? And, any pictures you might have, I appreciate all of your help.

Another alternative when shifting the engine panel is the EnginePod. Apparently later models shifted to using this design. Once I work up the energy to rebuild by pedestal console, I'm also going to reroute the cables inside it to add one of these, and probably shift the throttle controls to the pedestal as well.

My plan at that point had been to install a gasketed piece of StarBoard over the hole, probably with an indoor/outdoor speaker inset into it so I can listen to the sound system on deck without having to blast the sound belowdecks. Probably also install an all-weather toggle switch so I can cut out the speaker in case of bridge-to-bridge traffic. Still planning that for the Great Electrical Overhaul.

All just plans for me, although Northern Light had some of those mods which suggested it.

I just created an album with three pictures of my panel relocation. Just click AADIVER and it should come up in my Profile.

I did the mod a few years ago. The above link talks about what I did.

I'm happy with the outcome. When I did the mod, I couldn't find a replacement pod for the new panel. I eventually used the original. It was a bit small, but it allowed me to put 4 gauges, a remote for the stereo and the ignition.

When I did this change I also added a Blue Sea 6 switch DC panel that is rated for outside and the weather. I moved all the nav/anchor/spreader/running lights to this panel as well as my GPS. I know it's only a few steps down below to turn them on, but I thought it would be cool to have them up top.

Nice jobs on your panels. What we did was get a sunbrella cover for the panel, with four simple snaps. Saves the plastic cover, if nothing else.

Wow. You all inspire me. I'm ready to move my panel and have lots of great ideas thanks to the group and as always, thanks for all of your help.

I've thought that would be a very good idea. Did you create the cover so that it fits directly over the panel or do the 2 top snaps kind of go over the top to create a 'rain shield'?

Kinda more like your over the top, but nothing will stop rain getting in, so make sure you seal the top and sides of the "box" that the panel sits in. It's way easier to make the cover bigger and put the snaps on the coaming fiberglass.
