Cockpit Bug Netting...

I just finished posting a lot of pictures, probably too many, of ...

....a full cockpit...

...bug enclosure...

...that we hope will work.

It hangs inside the bimini/dodger using common sense fasteners and is very fast to put up or take down. This same method could probably by use pretty quickly using an outdoor bug net like what you use at home.

Really nice job on the canvas work. Thanks for the web pages, they give a good idea of how much work is really involved in a project like this.

Building the jig so you can work at home is a good idea, and in some ways is probably easier than actually working on the boat.

I'm curious why you extended the bug screening across the top though rather than just draping it from the bimini.

Thanks and these were a lot of work, but I enjoy it and so does Ruth.

About your question.....we wanted the screening to go up and down quickly so that we were more likely to use it. With it all being one piece I just have to connect the front of it under the dodger and Ruth takes it back and I work towards her and push it up and onto....

..... the common sense fasteners and twist them to secure it. It is quick and simple.

If we draped it over the bimini then it would be outside the coaming and we would end up with sealing problems on the outside or where the bimini supports are if we tried to bring it back in. At first I'd considered putting zippers on the bimini and zipping it to the sides, but then there would of been the transition at the corners and between the bimini/dodger to contend with and some other problems. I still do want to eventually add zippers to the bimini sides or common sense fasteners so that we could put sunbrella panels in place for wind or sun protection.

Also I'm just starting on the structure to hold a large solar array (480 watts) over the top of the bimini that would present a problem with the netting over the top. With the netting all on the inside and tucked under the cockpit cushions it eliminates a lot of areas that would still prove to be challenging sealing the bugs out and is easy to put up and down.
