We have a fiberglass anntenna for our Loran and everytime we touch it we get bits of fiberglass in our hands. It is usually only a problem when we put it on in spring and take it off in fall but a pain none the less. Anybody know if there is something we can coat it with that will seal it but still let it be flexible enuf not to crack and also not affect the antenna's effectiveness?

Epoxy resin?

The UV has started to break down the original plastic surface.

I rrubbed mine with a Scotch pad

to remove the loose flaky stuff and painted it with Rust O' Leum yellow. It's held up for about seven years now.

Any good oil based paint

will work. I hadn't thought about using a scotch pad as per Larry, but I have painted them. Works fine to eliminate the loose fiber strands that like your fingers, and has no effect on the performance of the antenna.

303 Protectant works.

I use it on fibreglass antennas, Garmin GPS antenna, compass cover, life ring, outboard motor cowling etc etc. It works like a sunscreen while polishing up the surface.

White Heat Shrink Tubing

It covers up the little glass fibers and lasts about 5 years in the sun. Then slip another layer on and shrink it over the last one with a hot air gun.

I put a shroud cover ...

on mine. My antenna seemed to be placed in the perfect position for a handhold too. The crew always seemed to grab onto it. Only needed to cover the first 12 inches or so. The white plastic blended with the antenna really well.

Correction; what I actually painted was

the fiberglass MOB pole, not an antenna, but the effect was the same, I guess.
