Coastal Sailing a C-27

Yes, a 27 or 28 can be a good coastal boat. I've been sailing my 27 off the coast of NJ since I brought it down from the Delaware River five weeks ago. Although so far I've used it just a few times in the ocean, the boat has been handling it fine. It rides nicely over the swells, and has enough weight and freeboard to cut through a moderate chop. It's not made to cross oceans, but it's great for going up and down the coast. Randy

Off shore?

Preparedness of boat and crew is more the question. While the 28 is not designed for off shore it can be sailed off shore when both the boat and crew are fully prepared. There is an annual race from San Francisco to Hawaii in the 27-size class. But the boats and crew are very well prepared. There are many things that should be done to go off shore cruising like training, safety gear and electronics. With proper rigging, sails, etc you can enjoy many off shore cruises. Good luck Bob C-36

That's what it was built for

You can take a reasonable guess that "Catalina"s were designed to sail from LA to Catalina Island without problems. If you're cautious about weather so you don't get in the shi*, you'll be fine (assuming you aren't planning ocean crossings). LaDonna

I crossed the gulf stream

in my '85 catalina 27 three years ago en route to walkers cay and then green turtle cay in the abacos. left the boat in green turtle for 2 years, then sailed back. engine was a constant problem but the boat sailed great. took on lots of water at one point, under power, calm seas. never figured out why, and it never happened again.

Depends on Where and When

You didn't say where you are located or what conditions prevail. There's a big difference between coastal sailing off So. California and Northern California. The 27 can handle both in decent weather, but No. California can be more dangerous for any boat. At least one beefed up C-27 has circumnavigated.

Thanks for all your responses.

I am surprised at all the replies. Thanks. Actually, I just got an offer accepted on a Catalina 30. It's a 1977 Atomic 4 Gas in really nice shape. I plan to live-aboard and do some heavy duty sailing (and fishing) so a realized that I needed a little more boat. Hopefully the deal will go through smoothly and I will be a new member of the CAT family. Karl
