Coastal Cruising

Well the boat is back in its home slip. Two days shy of three weeks since we pulled the plug. While we have sailed from Annapolis to Newport and back. This was the longest voyage for us. We logged over 1080 miles including two runs through Hell Gate, dodged some tremendous thunderstorms by into the Shark River, spent 6 days of bobbing around Long Island Sound, enjoyed an awesome O'day "rOnDAYvous" in Clinton, CT, and had two 2 fantastic runs up and down the Delaware Bay! We saw everything from glass calm, to 3-5 foot waves (in 25 knot winds!) The venerable O'day 35 took it all on without a moment of hesitation. Our crew of 5 had an absolute blast, and now as we recover our land legs and settle back into work, I must admit, I am looking forward to the next adventure.

Now is an excellent time to start creating those great memories that you can look back on years from now. We cruised our favorite waters back in the 1990s in our boat and sailed to places where we couldn't get to by car. We sailed Cape Cod and the Elizabeth Islands. One of the most memorable out of the way places outside of Cuttyhunk Island in that chain of islands is a place called Hadley's Harbor which is tucked inside a group of islands near Wood's Hole Ma. It's not unusual to see 40 to 50 boats anchored in there for the night. The place is beautiful in there. There's a boatyard, a pasture with cows, and lovely houses and mansions. It's all private. You can hop in your kayak or inflatable and meander the streams and small tributaries and there is only one small island that you can land on called Bass Island. The rest of the islands are off limits to all but the inhabitants. This also includes the largest island in the chain known as Naushon which is owned by the Forbes family. You can go ashore at Tarpaulin Cove but you can't venture off too far in. If you're there at the right time you may catch a glimpse of Senator John Kerry riding his $5000 bicycle on the island.

Motor and Sailing

Congrats! wondering is that leg going up Through NYC mostly all motoring?

We actually were under main sail with motor once we hit the Narrows, until clear of Throgs Neck. Same on the way back down except once we cleared the East River on the south bound leg, we went with the jib as well as the winds were awesome. Close reach all the way to Atlantic Highlands!

Denise- Having gone up and down the East River a few dozen times, I can say that sailing is very haphazard and hazardous in the river. The tall buidings affect the wind so it is all over the place from one moment to the next. Sooo its much better to have the engine running and be going with the current. There is also some commercial traffic Although I once experienced engine failure halfway down the river and survived, I would not like to repeat the performance. Ernie

If you loose your engine going down the east river you also loose steerage without sails so both is safer in my opinion if conditions permit. The east river is over 60 feet deep in many parts and anchoring is not really am option. The fast currents can easily scrape you into the concrete walls or pilings like an fiberglass/cheese grater. One thing a lot of people don't realize is there are water turbines on the bottom of the east river to provide electric to a section of nyc. If you drop an anchor and snag one your going to be in a bad place especially when you get the bill for damages.
