I am in a unique situation. Have a beautiful, 1980 Catalina 30 here in Charleston,S.C. Am relocating to Ventura, California. Boat is too expensive to transport and too time consuming to sail there. Love living aboard and want to find someone in the same or similar situation. Catalina 30 would be great, but any live aboard boat would be considered. Know anyone being transferred to the east coast, who hates to give up their boat? Please post the info. Thanks, Polly

Polly, I've seen estimates for long-hauling boats of your size between $900 and $2500. Are you sure that's too much? If you really love the boat, those might be reasonable costs compared with starting over again. (There's a lot of cross-hauling going on because of Katrina, so there may be deals to be made out there). Check in the back of magazines like Lattitudes and Attitudes or local sailing papers to see who's advertising.

Cost of Boat move
Average codt today to move a boat is $2 per mile based on point to point mileage not round trip. Then you have the cost of a haulout and de-masting on one end and a re-masting and a haul back in on the other end, can get kinda expensive cross country.I seriuosly doubt that anyone will drive a semi with a trailer to haul your boat cross country for anything less. Wish you luck with your swap. I too lived with my wife on a catalina 30..... in Slidell, La. Now we are in the hands of an insurance company...i think.

I just paid $1750 to get my 31 Allmand from Dallas, Tx. to Tulsa, Ok. approx 300 miles.Not to mention hauling and setup charges. I looked at all the options even buying another closer to Tulsa but I just couldn't give up on her. Buying another boat is always a risk. Keeping what you know and love will always be rewarding and enjoyable.I know where ever I go my Elcamino will be there with me no matter what the cost.If I go to another lake the boat I know and love goes with me. If I go to the ocean that'll be a hard decision but common sense will take over I'm sure. I guess it's guy thing.It's either ship it or gamble. Aint life grand?Such tough decisions

Tony, All of the current production Ford, Chevy and Dodge 3/4 and 1 ton pickups would laugh at this weight. My 2500 Dodge with the Cummins is rated to pull 12,000 on the hitch and 13,500 on the gooseneck and get about 15mpg. There are hundreds of guys out there making a decent living using these trucks to move freight all over the country. If you do the math $3000.00 for a 5100 mile round trip works out to .59 per mile. CHeap but do able for the small guy, especialy when he's stuck on the east coast looking to get west with out spending his own money. Up to 12' beam doesn't require an escort in most states and the permits would be reasonable at about $500. I've moved my H30, 29'11", 10' beam and 10K displacement with no problem. Pat

Decommissioning In Charleston
Polly. A few years ago we came over to Charleston to look at a Catalina 30 for sale at the City Marina. Although we did not purchase it I was setting up all my contingeny planning for decommissioning and transportation to Atlanta. We would have taken the boat up the ICW (north) to a yard for the haulout, pressure spray, mast removal , wrapping and lifting on the trailer. The yard was asking well over $500 to do this. After talking to a few of the transporters, I was advised that the plastic wrapping on the mast was really an unneccessary expense. If the hauler has a trailer that is equipped with a side mast saddle to hold the mast, rather then laying it on the deck, its a sure money saver. The shrouds, and stays can be wrapped around the mast with pieces of carpet and duct tape rather then the expensive plastic wrap process. Check with the transporter to see if indeed the trailer is equipped with the side mast holder so you can save some bucks and maybe you can provide the carpet pieces and tape and the labor for securing the mast lines as well. I do recommend that you have the haul pressure sprayed when removed for the water to get off any scum. You can paint the bottom in the yard while its being commissioned. Hope this helps abit.
