Way too political

I guess it got way too political. But the name calling and hostility that followed the controversy was probably the main reason. Think of some names that used to be on here all the time that you dont see anymore. They just burned out on some of the non-sense. Cant blame them tho. I have to admit that I add fuel to the fire sometimes. I dont take it serious though. I just get bored at work. Some posts just get carried away. I can see how newbe's would just throw up their hands and give up also. I have noticed that sometimes a new-be would actually apologize for starting a fight with what should be a simple question. Its a crazy world. Tony B

Mea Culpa. I intentionally fed the flames a bit.

I would like to see this forum stick with boat talk. Support of government agencies and suspicion of government agencies are both patiotism, depending on your viewpoint, and both valid. There's a thread for that. Rants and politics.

Who would have guesses that. LOL. Anyway, the post here is "Why was the discussion about the CG removed?" and what do we get fopr a reply?..... "Speaking of Coast Guard I think they do a terrific job and deserve our respect and support." Great, most of us agree and some dont, but what does that have to do with the original question of why was this discussion removed? Here we go again. Tony B

My theory

I wonder if when the discussion moved into the area of just what homeland security/coast guard's survellience abilities on the Great Lakes actually were, if someone got nervous and decided it was time to pull the discussion for security reasons. Nasty posts were pretty much over once the axe fell.

Talk about anything just don't

rock the boat. Nothing controversial. No unpopular opinions please, especially ones that the majority doesn't hold near and dear. As long as the post is enjoyable and interesting (for most) and doesn't create waves, it's ok. Step over the to the other side,(unpopular) and chances are you'll either get banned or deleted. If we all just go along with the show and don't speak our minds, then it will be OK. Speak up and defend your position(the unpopular one) and it then becomes a stance that is unpopular and will most likely be viewed with a skeptical eye, and bordering on the trash bin. The subject matter was expanding into areas, Phil didn't want to tread into. It was becoming very interesting and somewhat controversial. Lord knows, we don't want anything controversial. With your head in the sand, your butts in the air. You gotta know what you're going to get. Screwed. Keep it up, Ctskip

Unpopular opinions are my specialty. I

posted one yesterday on the benefits of jib alone instead of reefing, and I think dripless packing is a disaster waiting to happen on maybe a hundred thousand boats. Higgs, you may be right. With the budget they've got, and the CIA guy running Google, those who watch us could get paranoid about a bunch of wierdos with boats who don't respect the Coast Guard, or heaven forbid, Homeland Security itself. Don't post any avatars with a towel around your head.

Ctskip, Everyone is always welcome to post their opinions anywhere, but if you post them on an owned & managed board, you play by the rules. There is even a forum here for those posts, just not this one. The CG thread was getting way out of hand... maybe it should have been moved to the lounge, but heck, it's not my board and I don't pay the bills so I'm don't see a reason to gripe. I think if you pee in somebody else's pool and splash all the other kids, you can't complain when they ask you to go leave. Dave Crowley Wind Dreamer II

you are absoultly correct

about the "it's his pool and we swim by his rules". I have no problem with that. It's just seems that when something gets controversial and some one takes the unpopular side, and expresses his views very articulately, the thread is being strung tight and will be broken.??? No room for controversy?? I thought thats what a discussion was all about. I know articles that express differing views, tell you, "this is not their view". I can understand and I don't have any problem playing by the "rules". Never did. I'm a grown up and know how to change the channel. I also don't feel it was "getting out of hand". It was just starting to get to the nitty gritty of the situation. Some don't want to feel the heat, never mind finding the cause of it. Allow me to ask you this... Why then was the CG thread removed? What rule was broken? Granted, it should of been moved, not removed. Keep it up, Ctskip.

I can almost understand.........

I can almost understand why Phil pulled the thread, but I dont necessarily agree with it. If he pulled it for political reasons, I may or may not agree with it. But If he pulled it because people were getting to the point of foaming at the mouth and name calling, then I could understand him pulling that to avoid making people enemies. I personally, found the thread very interesting. tony B

Good grief

What is it with some of you?? I have read too many posts where someone says "Yes, I guess I fed the flames" or something to that effect. Worse, the same people keep doing it over and over and then apologizing. This is a forum for people to ask questions about boats and to get helpful advice. It is a private forum with rules. Many of us are sick to death of a handfull of posters who think they are God's gift to sailing and everything else and who become abusive. We all know who they are. You know who you are. If your post is not helpful and courteous then DON'T POST IT!! I, for one, appeciate Phil deleting obnoxious threads, posts and hopefully kicking serial abusers off this forum.

If you dont like the Coast Guard....

try and keep that fact to yourself. And the next time you are in trouble, call someone else.

Deletions

I don't care what kind of opinions you post here. Well, with one exception: if your opinion involves Red vs. Blue it has to go to the Sails Call forum. Threads get deleted because they turn into personal arguments. When the name calling and profanity starts, then expands, the thread goes. It's very simple. Threads are _not_ deleted because they are controversial or I disagree with them. Our forums have had a very clear purpose for ten years. They are here to exchange sailing-related information, provide sailing-related entertainment, and offer sailing-related education. They are (or should be) welcoming to the new sailboat owner. Our forums are moderated to preserve that purpose. If you want a different forum, one that goes outside those boundaries, I have tried to create that for you (The Sails Call Forum and the Cruising Sailors Forum operate outside these guidelines). If that still isn't enough, then you may be on the wrong site. Sailing Anarchy, Lats and Atts, they probably never delete anything. I respect what they do, I admire their popularity, maybe we're being short-sighted, but what they do is not what we do. Rather than turning this forum into something it's not, perhaps it makes more sense to find a venue better suited to what you want.

Thanks Phil, Thats why I like to see your ship

show up! Why don't you guys start up that thread with out the name calling and see where it goes? Controversy is good here, as long as it stays a debate. There are few facts about sailing and alot of debate. You can't bully someone into your thinking. It is a good arguement (the legal kind)that will most often show to be true. Let's sail! r.w.landau

Upon further review

The Coast Guard Inspections thread is now playing in the Sails Call Lounge. Ctskip makes a good point, moving it probably would have been enough.
