Self Reliance

Thanks for sharing this Tom. It's a great story, and we should all be thankful, there are people like these Coasties who are willing to put their lives on the line for us. It's also an interesting follow up to our quiz discussion on self reliance from last week. The ethics of going out into the North Atlantic in mid November, a time and place where no small sailboat belongs, and then asking someone to risk their lives to save you when you get into trouble are really questionable in my mind. It will also be interesting to see if the boats survive. Not infrequently, when captain and crew abandon ship like this in a storm, the boats are later found intact, drifting some distance away. Gary, I'm with you,

I think these people should have to defend themselves against crimihal charges and PAY FOR THE RESCUE! ;{

Lost in the woods

I believe that if these folks were “lost in the woods” all of the rescues costs ARE paid for by those rescued. I don’t know why it should be any different for sea rescues. Hopefully I will never get the “bill” for pulling me out of deep deep doo doo. But if the time ever comes, I’d gladly pay in full.
