Fairly complex.
Did your past one expire?

It did take a long time to finally get ours.

Be careful! I paid $100 more going through that agent that mimics USCG National Vessel Documentation Center I was renewing a mooring lease and noticed my documentaion was nearing expriration. I normally get a notice from USCG. This time I did not. I Googled National Vessel Documentation Center and went to a site that looked governmental. I fillled out the renewal page and paid the bill. I did not realize it was a service agent until much later. To their credit, the do a really good job mimicing. I was fully aware of this outfit, and still got tagged. BTW, it was a five year renewal.

I almost fell for it this year until I looked at the price. I'll stick to my every year renewal as I have been doing for the past 20 years..... no big deal.

You can download the form to pdf with a card authorization form and email it

Please educate me. What is the advantage of a multi-year CG Documentation renewal if the yearly price is the same? Just the convenience of waiting 5 years before mailing in a check?

The benefit of a five-year expiration is NOT having it expire BEFORE the annual renewal application date in the event you forget OR did not calendar the annual renewal application date THEN having to pay a penalty to renew it......I know as it happened to me once.

:plus:

but the true definition of Irony...

It arrived 2 days before Hurricane Zeta. Zeta damaged our boat.

So renewal CG registration is still at home.;)

Also that boat damage will show under the Coast Guard Title , eventually.
Jim...

PS: Note my post above

Did your past one expire?

Geez Jim - As much as many would like to think the federal government does (or should have) central control on all things - so far USCG is not yet BoatFox, CarFax, or the like.

I am sure there are other posts on this, but since so many folks responding to this do the USCG documentation, could you remind me why you do that rather than state licensing? I’m in Maine and don’t plan to go international just coastal sailing - what is the advantage? I seem to get confusing answers when I call our state registration folks.

The mortgage company wanted me to keep the boat documented as a condition of issuing the loan. As a result, the state of MD only wants a $10 use fee every two years.

I tried to do 5 years renewal using online , it does not work. I emailed them and the reply came back that if you want 5 years you have to do it by snail mail. There is no financial advantage to 5 years but it does save you jumping through the same stupid hoop five times.
As for why document, my understanding is that it provides a good paper trail of the boats ownership and it may save you some state tax.
The USCG reply:
Renewal fee is $26 per year.
Currently, multi-year renewals cannot be processed online.
You need to submit by email/mail
A (5) year renewal (REC ONLY) is $130

If you have received a notification that is it $375, that is a third party agent offering their service to you at their cost.
They also have sites online.

Thanks

THIS IS A GOVERNMENT OPERATION THAT WAS SUPPOSED TO ROLL OUT ON JANUARY 1ST........Well before the roll out they knew they were in trouble and pushed it back to the 18th in hopes that they would get it figured out..Wishful thinking. You might as well do your DOC now for a year and hope that they get it resolved by next year or the year after.

Maybe your right ,whats the big deal about renewing for five years....
Seemed like a good idea to me
Only having to do paperwork once every five years versus every year made sense

Except keeping track of something important that occurs only every five years rather than every year is harder - at least for me it is.
And if you were to sell your boat before the five years were up, you would lose the pre-paid balance. You just never know what will happen years from now.

USCG does a Title search and in USA, in time of war, can seize your boat for National Defense.

Yes and the Carfax for Boats is this site...
Boat History Report

That shows ownership and insurance claims.
Jim...

PS: USCG does show if your boat is involved in an Accident.

True.

But I did get a reminder from USCG to renew.

Also when we bought our boat , we paid $800 to get all previous titles cleared and the new USCG paperwork.
Also the boat was in Florida. We could not return to Florida for 6 months, since we did NOT register it in Florida.

We had to put a Decal on our boat to prove that. Oh well , tough to avoid the Tax Man.

Just received my phony USCG Notice today in the mail. The same one I got last year.
It has all the right information of my boat on it but its NOT the USCG Documentation Center Notice.
Don‘t fall for it if you get one. Only the USCG Documentation Center has the $26.00 yearly option. If mailing your $26.00 it goes to Falling Waters, WV. Go on line for full USCG address.
The letter I keep getting is an Internet address and QR Code Only.
Alarm Bells !
