Interesting discussion and here I've been sailing a 16' hobie cat around for 25 yrs with only a life jacket clipped to tramp lines.

That may work, but it would be illegal to dump it over board. See Peggy's post:

Thankfully, ive never used it and try to sail where i wont need to.
