A few months ago there was a string about where is the right place to put the Coast Guard Documentation Number. One of the suggestions was to mount self adhesive numbers and paint over them with clear epoxy. My question is, since this will be permanent and I don't want to mess it up, exactly what was meant by clear epoxy. Is there some kind of epoxy paint or is this just clear epoxy adhesive? Tom

Well Tom!

"Official Numbers: The six or seven digit official number awarded by the U.S. Coast Guard must be permanently marked in block type Arabic numerals not less than three (3) inches high on some clearly visible interior structural part of the hull. The number must be preceded by the addreviation "NO.", and must be affixed in a manner which would make alteration, removal, or replacement obvious." Now you realize you are dealing with a govern"mental" entity. So this probably leaves a lot for interpetation. But basically you should be able to coat the letters with anything that would protect the letters from being removed and not be obvious. You just need to make sure that the materials are compatable before you do it.

I did mine with...

just regular old epoxy adhesive and one of those cheapo foam brushes. Worked just fine. You don't want one of the really fast setting epoxies because they will kick off before you get a nice layer over the numbers. Get one of the ones that comes in a two part syringe and mix it up on some cardboard.

Did my in May

I recently did mine, I used the self stick number and put then in the bilge area and then use a 2 part epoxy to permenently fix them.

melted in

Mine is melted in on a part way back on the port side. It was done by the original owner and done on an interior wall, not the hull. Not sure how he did it but it looks great!

I did mine...

by affixing the numbers on the bilge and then coating it with clear epoxy. It comes in a tube similar to a syringe except that it had 2 tubes dispensing a mixture of the epoxy. You mix it on a piece of cardboard and apply...voila!
