coaming box

Has anyone installed a coaming box in the cockpit of their O'day 28? I think it would be handy to have a pair of them to hold "stuff": winch handles, sheets, gloves etc. I have seen the coaming box kits in the marine catalogs and it looks like they would fit in a 28 O'day but if anyone has installed one or a set of them I'd be interested to hear your experience.

You asked about installing them on a 28 .We installed them on our 25. The hardest part was the picking the up power tool to make that first hole .I looked around the internet and saw the going price was about 60 dollars.Kendars Marine right down the street has them for 10 bucks each. A couple of suggestions; Make a template of the hole.This is the size of the  recessed part ,not the whole bin. Use the template to make sure that both bins are exactly  in the same place on both coamings.  LOOK BEHIND where you plan on installing the bins. Are there wires ,hoses,cables or any other obstructions? Use a high quality sealant Trial fit the bins before you seal them in   Hope this helps

Some possible answers

I didn't worry about the draining of the coaming bins as all of our boats heel and the water just runs right out. The website that Rad shows a link to is only for other companies to buy from.  This means you need to go to your boat dealer and have him order it for you.Now most of the time you will pay for all of it up front.You wont get to see the actual product until it shows up at your door. The link is a manufacturer that makes very good units that the boat manufacturers buy from. As far as actual dimensions I am not able to tell you that as my boat is some 50 miles away.

Good advice and thanks

Measure twice and cut once is the best advice when cutting into fiberglass. That first cut is the scariest for sure. Thanks for the links and info. Looks like it can be done so, with a little money it will be done.
